NEW BOOK CHALLENGES YOUNG ADULTS TO TAKE WORLD-CLASS RISKS
By Marco Signorelli
"There was a time in my life when nothing else mattered but being somewhere else. Where exactly, was unimportant. Just somewhere else—any place other than where I was at the time. And when I arrived—wherever there happened to be—I soon got restless, and again had the urge to move on. I always wanted something new—something different. I always wanted what I did not have."
And so begins Mysterious Places, Mysterious Dreams— the wonderful new novel memoir by first-time author Steven Rivellino (Xlibris. 357 pp).
And along with it comes what some might consider to be a radical new philosophy—radical, in that it subtly succeeds at seducing young adults to venture out on their own. It encourages teens to not simply follow the crowd as they are usually instructed to do. It challenges them to take some key risks quite early on— not only with their lives, but with their impressionably youthful experience as well.
"Ships are quite safe when tied to their docks" Rivellino writes, "but ships are not made to stay safely in harbor. They’re made to go to sea."
Indeed, travel memoirs have come and gone—some quite good; others offering the reader nothing more than one man’s egoistical point-of-view. Most agree—the genre has been around since Noah sailed the Ark. And at first glance, MPMD might seem to be just another tome destined to toss overboard once one’s personal voyage is through. But look a bit deeper and you’ll be sure to find here a gem of a story, beautifully told, in a memoir which skillfully marries bold quirky personalities with spectacular human events—all with the entire world as its backdrop.
It’s January 1973. A young man, barely nineteen years of age, signs onboard the classic Norwegian passenger liner Sagafjord to work in her shore excursion office. Little did he know just what was in store.
This was not a typical sailing, to say the least. For on that bitter cold January day, Sagafjord was embarking upon her annual winter escape… a ninety-eight day voyage to circumnavigate the globe.
Anyone who has had the privilege of sailing onboard a classic ocean liner will instinctively understand how just being at sea becomes in itself a transformational experience. From the moment the great ship sails free, tossing her lines ashore with a splash and a wave, a world is created—a truly unique "world within a world." Time is stilled, and her onboard society stoically gels in an unusually private and protected way.
Sagafjord was unique. Built in France in 1965 by Den Norske Amerikalinje (Norwegian America Line) for the dual transatlantic and seasonal cruising trade, this classic liner was perhaps the last of a cherished breed—beautifully elegant, luxuriously personal; designed and built in true human scale.
Moreover, 1973 was a year still well within that bygone era when steamship lines (they were still called steamship lines back then) would accept only full-cruise passengers on such epic voyages. Today, passengers often boast of taking a world cruise, yet rarely do they remain onboard for the entire multi-month voyage; choosing instead to purchase "legs" as they are now called… 14 days, 21, days, 45 days. The ship herself does indeed circumnavigate the globe, yet only a handful of passengers actually do sail completely around the world.
Living together with 450 wandering strangers for three months within a constantly moving and tightly confined space doesn’t necessarily sound like it should be the most eagerly anticipated experience of one’s life. Yet those who have indeed enjoyed that luxury know well how nothing in life truly compares to those marvelously secluded days at sea. Together, one experiences "the world." And for those privileged and select few, life will never be the same.
Mysterious Places, Mysterious Dreams beautifully depicts those glorious days in a glaring new light; a rare behind-the-scenes view of day-to-day life onboard a classic liner of the time. From candid personal insights into the extravagant lives of the rich and idle, to the societal hierarchy between passengers and crewmembers, Rivellino tells a very engaging tale of true, honest, human interaction.
At the center of his account are three disparate travelers; each, unknowingly searching for this own naked truth. Together, weathering the very human storms of a dramatic and changeable sea, they uniquely bond in a surprising friendship. And where it all ends is only revealed on that very final day, landing at New York.
But perhaps what makes Mysterious Places, Mysterious Dreams truly unique is its overall message to young adults who just might— who must— pick up this very readable volume. There’s an entire world out there; it’s there for us to explore. And it’s essential for each of us to do just that in order to fully understand who we are, and where we might be going.
Rivellino entertainingly challenges the accepted protocol for today’s young adults of randomly choosing a university while still in High School, blindly determining a subject major—and therefore a life-long career— even before the youth has a chance to understand anything about the world or himself. He encourages young adults then— young adults of any age— to take key risks quite early on. To demand to challenge just who they are in relation to the world in which we live. Then, and only then, can the true rewards of life be put before them. Then, and only then, will they fully understand from where they came, and to where they might like to go.
Mysterious Places, Mysterious Dreams is a terrific journey of its own. Beautifully written, honestly portrayed. Anyone daring to challenge himself should not miss this uniquely personal and powerfully satisfying opportunity. ®

From the Inside Flap
In this uniquely-written novel memoir, first-time author Steven Rivellino daringly delves into the lives and the minds of three very distinct men as they sail the world on their various voyages of discovery. The book’s protagonist, also named Steven, is a young, easily-influenced college student, dangerously on the verge of manhood. While onboard the Norwegian liner Sagafjord, he meets Percy, a somewhat flamboyant British gentleman, grandly seeking wealth and good fortune; and Archibald, an author and historical lecturer nearly 30 years his senior, whose lifetime search for acceptance and love inevitably leaves him in circles.
Together, they set out on their journey to circumnavigate the globe. Unknowingly, however, they are destined for an epic adventure of great challenge, learning, and naked self-discovery. The events of the world clearly define their roles — and along the way, their unique relationships evolve from initial denial and great distrust, to a close and dynamic bond— never-before expected; forever true.

Ocean Liners, exotic locations, & self-discovery in 1 book!
By Ernest K Roller
Ocean Liners, Exotic Locations, and one man's voyage of Self-Discovery - it's all here!
I thoroughly enjoyed this exceptional read! It brought many of my own past emotions to the surface. I think this is a wonderful thing and it speaks volumes about Mr. Rivellino's writing abilities.
The book is a true story, based on the author's own experiences working onboard an ocean liner. If you have an interest in World travel and ocean liners, I don't think you will be disappointed. You will read about far off lands around the globe and the luxury liner which takes you there. More important, you will become encompassed in the author's journey of self-discovery as a young man, and the many interesting characters along the way that help shape him.
People, places, self discovery, and ocean liners. For me that spells a formula for success. If you feel the same way then I have no doubt you will become engrossed in Mr. Rivellino's entertaining true story.
Highly recommended.

Unique Perspective
By Rick H. Chambon
Mr. Rivellino writes a delightful book about the last days of the Golden Era of oceanliner travel. It is also a wonderful story about a young mans journey into adulthood. However, it is also a grand adventure on a world cruise.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in cruise ships, and an uplifting story about a young gay man.
