I bought this book on a whim... or maybe not. If you've landed on this page, I suggest you buy this book because whatever brought you this far, with this amazing book, it will expand beyond your wildest expectations! That's what happened to me. Not reading this book but, DOING this book has been the most enormous life changing expedition I've ever been on, through, in, and over. Or maybe it's the perfect culminating tool I needed to make sense of the many ups and downs and ins and outs so far in my journey. The meditations and guidance Peggy Rometo shares while you read through this book, are amazing catalysts for serious life change and revelation.

I recommend this wonderful spirit journey of a book hands down and I know I will read/do it many many many times more. It's more of a handbook on accessing your intuitive gifts, or figuring out your life's path, or understanding and utilizing all of the 'lessons' your life experience has brought and so much more. I have read umpteen books in this category and have been a 'seeker' for longer than i can remember and this book has had the most profound effect on me of them all. Peggy Rometo is beyond awesome!

Apparently there are no parallel sayings...

I bought this for a friend, but snuck a peek when it arrived at mine. As it turns out none of the saying are parallel in meaning, John and Grouch do however seem to know a lot of the same words. The selections seem to be based on quotes where both men use one or more of the same word(s) in a sentence. I think somebody got stoned and decided to write a book about their two favorite people. Nice for a good laugh, but probably not what you're expecting.

Indoctrinating a new generation of devout Marxist-Lennonists

I never bought the Fireside Theater comedy album "How Can You Be In Two Places At Once When You're Not Anywhere At All?," but I was greatly impressed by the cover shot. It showed that particular gang of lunatics posing like they were standing on top of Lenin's tomb in Red Square in Moscow beneath posts of Groucho Marx and John Lennon (which the n's in Lennon's name backwards like they were Cyrillic letters). By the time I saw that album cover I already knew that I was a devout Marxist of the Brothers kind and the idea that John Lennon was more worthy of emulation than Vladimir Lenin was pretty much fully formed in my mind as well. Ever since the names of Marx and Lennon have been linked in my mind, and apparently Joey Green, best known as the inventor of wacky uses for brand-name products, is on the same wavelength as well.

"Marx & Lennon: The Parallel Sayings" juxtaposes sayings by Groucho Marx from his movies and assorted writings from those by John Lennon from his songs and assorted writings. For example, in "The Coconuts," Groucho said, "One for all and all for me and me for you and three for five and six for a quarter," while in "I Am the Walrus," Lennon sang, "I am me as you are he as you are me and we are all together."

Eerie, huh?

More than a Fireside Theater album cover what this book will remind you of those comparisons between Jesus and Elvis that pop up all over the place (You know, the ones that remind us Jesus said, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" while Elvis sang, "Don't be cruel"). Fortunately Green is treading on less sacred ground with this collection. Plus he comes up with about 400 of these parallel sayings, which range from the wistfully wry to the potentially profound. But mostly this book is fun and a timely reminder that pop culture icons speak more eloquently and more truthfully than politicians or pundits (the latter seem to be doing more talking than the former these days).

Yoko Ono provides an introduction to the book to give her blessing (Is this a counterpunch to Paul McCartney's attempt to have all of those Beatle songs now be listed as having been written by McCartney & Lennon rather than Lennon & McCartney? You decide), and then the first chapter, "Parallel Sayings, Parallel Lives" looks at the coincidental similarities between the two men, born 50 years apart, both in October, both the witty and sarcastic leaders of two of the most recognizable groups of the 20th century. The fact that they admired each other just makes it all that much more interesting. Besides, if I were still a student I would just be dying to find a way to use one of these sets of parallel sayings as the attention getting quotes at the start of a paper.

While I enjoy the witticism's of both

While I enjoy the witticism's of both, the connections in sayings, and Groucho and John, are tenuous, if not absurd. Reading the introduction, I was shocked at the straws being grasped at to make the two relate. They were both born in October! Groucho Marx had a book of pictures of him in beds, and John Lennon had a Bed-in! They both wore a mustache! Someone kept making connections with Karl Marx and John Lennon, and that's funny cause Groucho's last name is Marx!

The sayings are connected by having a similar subject, not necessarily similar themes. Every once in awhile they would say something similar, but for the most part I just was reading one Marx quote and then an unrelated Lennon quote.

While I am disappointed, I did enjoy reading some quotes from both. So... there's that!

About the Author
Stephen Cope is a Senior Scholar-in-Residence and a Kripalu Ambassador. He is a Western-trained psychotherapist who writes and teaches about the relationship between Western psychological paradigms and the Eastern contemplative traditions. Stephen holds degrees from Amherst College and Boston College. He completed graduate and postgraduate training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy in the Boston area, where he practiced for many years before joining the staff at Kripalu. In its 25th anniversary edition, Yoga Journal named him one of the most important innovators in the developing field of American yoga.

Great Bible geared toward women

When I first saw this Bible I thought, hmmm, it's geared toward African-American women, but wondered if perhaps it might not speak to women in general and after having the opportunity to use it for a couple of weeks I would unequivocally say yes!

The first thing that captured my eye was the appealing colors used, it is a purple Bible and the font is purple and pink with the pages being a soft white which causes the words to just pop off of the pages. Some of the features that I found inside were, The Heart, which gives a nice overview of each book of the Bible. Quest and discovery are questions and answers that explore some of the most difficult situations that women might encounter in life. Notes to self contains fifty snippets of wisdom drawn straight from the scriptures. Hands down though my favorite feature had to be the "she speaks" in which we get to look at life through the eyes of some of the women in the Bible. They are told in the first person which made it so easy for me to imagine these women and their lives. There is also a feature index which makes navigating the Bible quite easy. A concordance,maps and several blank pages which can be used for notes round out this Bible quite nicely.

I have found myself using this Bible in my daily Bible reading and have found it easy to navigate, and have really enjoyed exploring the many features. While it is geared toward African-American women, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any woman, after all aren't we all Sisters in Christ!

Sisters in Faith Holy Bible

Sisters in Faith Holy Bible is the King James version edited by Michele Clark Jenkins and Stephanie Perry Moore. In this version you will discover devotionals to help you apply the Bible to your life, answer questions about life and faith, and read creative articles from women in the Bible.

Sisters in Faith Holy Bible is a version of the Bible that isn't just for women of color. It is really written for any woman in mind. As you can tell from my picture in the corner over there, I am not colored (and am usually quite pale). However, I really do enjoy this version of the Bible. It is a nicely formatted Bible that looks great and holds up very well - even if you throw it into your bag often, or are the type that lets it sit nicely on your bedside table or shelf most of the time. The pages are formatted to make it appealing for women to read as well. The fonts are in a deep purple and pink, with softer white pages.

My favorite part of the Sisters in Faith Holy Bible is the "Quest and Discovery" portions that answer questions about life and faith. I also really enjoyed the "She Speaks" part which are creative articles that were written in the perspective of different women in the Bible.

Sisters in Faith KJV Bible Review

I can't even tell you how excited I was to find the new Sisters of Faith KJV Bible on Booksneeze to review. I've been wanting a new Bible for a long time and here was my chance! I love this Bible and highly recommend it to everyone. Although it does plainly say on the front "Encouraging and Empowering African-American Women with God's Truth" it obviously does not limit itself to just that category of person.

There are several really nice features of this Bible. The "She Speaks" section has stories from the point of view of women in the Bible, such as Noah's wife, Rebekah, Tirzah, etc.

Throughout the Bible are sections (like "righteousness", "fear", "extended family") where a verse is taken and expounded upon. This includes a practical application to life and a prayer.

Each book of the Bible begins with a brief overview and how it relates to sisters in faith. There are nice maps in the back of the Bible, and a section for note-taking. There is a pretty lengthy concordance and a feature index included.

I have read a lot of this Bible since receiving it, but there are still some parts I have not even gotten to yet - apparently there are poems hidden in some of the pages, motivational articles, and even lessons of faith through modern-time women. These are supposed to be short snippets, like one of the items labeled "Note to self" which reads, "God has you here for a reason. Be excited for each new day. Jeremiah 29:11. As I grow older, I grow wiser... Rejoice in the new day!"

The Bible has thick pages which are easy to write on and the columns are wide enough to take some notes on, although you will have to write pretty small. This is a great devotional/study Bible, especially for women, and add the fact that it's KJV (which I actually do like), it's definitely a Bible I highly recommend!
