Grayson Visits Gotham
By Scott Knight
With Grayson Vol. 3: Nemesis, Tom King continues his entertaining look at Dick Grayson (formerly Nightwing and the first Robin) as a superspy. However, Grayson isn't sure if he's working for good or bad ends.
Coming on the heels of the last collection, Vol. 3 sees Dick Grayson's former partner, Matron, as the new head of Spyral. While he continues to work undercover for Batman, he also has to accomplish his missions. However, someone is killing rival spies in all the locations Grayson has been and in a manner consistent with Grayson's skills. In the course of attempting to uncover who is framing him, he runs afoul of Lex Luthor and discovers that Bruce Wayne has become an amnesiac and remembers nothing of his life as Batman. There is also a short adventure with Superman.
The two storylines in the Nemesis collection are both pretty good. The mystery of who is framing Dick is engaging, and goes with the general feel of the previous Spyral storylines. It is fun and entertaining, echoing the best action of James Bond-type movies, while keeping up with the humorous tone of Dick Grayson's character.
The more engaging and poignant story, though, is Dick's discovery of Bruce Wayne's condition. Dick makes a return to Gotham in order to see Bruce for himself, and while there he reveals to his fellow Bat-Family members that he is indeed not dead, like they believed. This results in some very emotionally charged exchanges. Dick's meeting with Damien Wayne (the current Robin, who was recently deceased himself) is particularly impactful. The relationship between these two characters has been the most interesting over the past several years, and it's nice to see the character development continue.
King's Grayson Vol. 3: Nemesis continues his excellent series. I highly recommend it all readers, but especially to fans of Dick Grayson, Batman, and spy stories.
I received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

3 stars of indifference
By Alt
Can’t figure out what to do with Robin now that he’s too big for short pants? Make him James Bond. Or Jason Bourne. Or Napoleon Solo. Or Doc Savage with pale skin. Whatever. I guess he got tired of the Nightwing gig. Of course, there’s a backstory in the earlier volumes. Of course, it’s ridiculously contrived. Dick Grayson fakes his death and become a glamorous spy. Or something like that.
As the volume begins, Grayson pushes the handle of a door on a jet, causing it to open mid-flight, sending a child tumbling out of the plane. He calls this a hostage rescue. Um, wait, that can’t happen. Cabin pressure keeps the doors on a jet from opening in flight. LOOK IT UP, WRITERS! Sigh. In any event, the rescue of the kid is disturbingly dangerous. Surely there was an easier way that didn’t risk the kid’s death by heart attack after being thrown out of an airplane. Not to mention death by going SPLAT on the ground in Grayson doesn’t catch him.
Anyway, here’s the plot. Someone is clubbing Spyral agents on the head. Spyral is running out of agents. Grayson to the rescue. Or is Grayson killing the spies? But first, Grayson has to steal a jewel from a beautiful woman by dancing the tango with her. The jewel is made from a special kind of kryptonite, so naturally Lex Luthor shows up. Oh, Grayson also cheeses off Agent 1, who vows revenge. In other words, a typical New 52 plot.
The best part of this volume, by far, is Grayson’s interaction with Bruce Wayne, who has improbably forgotten all about his costumed crime fighting career. A reunion of Robins is less successful. The Robins are like, “What are you doing alive you big fibber” and Grayson is like “Dudes, I did it for you” and the Robins are like “Yeah whatever.” Then Grayson has a girlfriend moment with Batgirl. Then he hooks up with a less-than-super Superman. Some of this advances the plot -- a little -- but much of it comes across as filler.
Toward the end, the latest incarnation of Blockbuster shows up, transforming this from a James Bond story to a superhero versus supervillain story. I’m not sure if the writer decided that the original concept wasn’t working or if the notion of supervillains is to ingrained to ignore. The “we’re all just guys” theme at the end is pretty weak, but the story as a whole is just good enough to eke out three stars of indifference.
Grayson makes wisecracks like a Boy Wonder who never grew up. Not Bond-like at all. Women apparently want to bed him because he has a nice bum, but I imagine they change their minds if they have to listen to him speak. It even rubs off on Superman. Superman making wisecracks? Seriously? Do you know why fights in DC comics never seem realistic? Because people engaged in a serious fight don’t waste their wind with nonstop moronic commentary. Note to DC writers: You don’t have to fill every panel with dialog. GRAPHIC storytelling can rely on GRAPHICS to tell much of the story. There are times -- lots of times -- when it’s better for characters to just shut up.
The art follows the new DC tradition of “I’ll draw the characters any way I feel like it, and if Superman doesn’t look anything like Superman, so what?”

This is the most fun book of the New 52!
By Eden P.
I've downloaded and read every single issue of this series for my kindle since it got started. This is my favorite DC title currently and will miss buying a new issue every wednesdays of every month even though I'm looking forward to DC Rebirth and the title character will return to being Nightwing again. Thank goodness this trade copy is available to buy here in Amazon. The paper and ink version is far superior than the digital copy and deserve a place in a comic lover's shelf. The superb writing of Tim and Tom and top notch art by Mikel Janin is what kept me hooked to this book since the beginning. Dick Grayson's characterization is spot on. He is funny without being stupid. His sense of humor is what made him stand out in the bat family and it feels like classic. This is far superior than the Batgirl of Burnside which is mediocre at best and annoying at worst and the art work is too cartoony for a rated teen book. Batgirl is trying too hard to be a trendy hipster right down to the costume redesign and doing selfies but she's dumber now than pre-flashpoint Oracle. In contrast, this Dick Grayson is smarter, his dialogue and actions shows it to us. His progression as a character feels more natural providing his history, it doesn't feel forced like the change in Batgirl. He feels like classic Dick Grayson as Robin or Nightwing only without mask because the writing team did their homework. The art style is superior to Batgirl too. It's how a rated teen book should look, not like it was designed for someone under twelve years of age. He was smart even as a child in the golden age comics where he would solve the Riddler's puzzle ahead of Batman, only this is the adult version of the same character. I won't give alot of spoilers but this volume included a humorous encounter with the long time villain/current anti-hero Lex Luthor. I had a laugh as Lex underestimate the title hero and there were bald jokes(from Dick Grayson as he made his escape from Lex). There was also a team up with the New 52 Superman which is more bittersweet now that he won't be around. I would like to thank the writers for acknowledging these character's shared history. Superman is a different kind of mentor for Dick Grayson. He was fun and casual as oppose to the dark knight serious demeanor. Tim and Tom made the right choice to include the man of steel in the story because i'ts very rare to see this team up in the New 52. This is a must have for collectors. This copy will stay on your table or shelf long after your kindle tablet give up on you. Five stars for a fun read.
