5 stars for Preacher, but 2 for this edition!

Sigh. I sold off all my Preacher TPBs in anticipation of this hardcover edition. Vertigo has been doing a great job with hardcovers of Y: The Last Man, and Ex Machina, so I was assuming this would be the same format.

Wrong! Instead of being slightly oversized, as those two books I just mentioned are, this is exactly the same size as a standard comic book. Instead of being printed on beautiful, heavy, matte stock like Y: TLM, or on beautiful, glossy stock like Ex Mach, it is on the same standard stock as the more recent editions of the TPBs...maybe even a little inferior to those editions-- a little thinner, if I'm not mistaken.

At $39.99, it is also terribly overpriced, for what you get. For example, compare this lackluster presentation with Dark Horse Comics' hardcover collections of Hellboy ($50), or Icon's Powers ($30). Those books are absolutely gorgeous, oversize, true collector's editions that are worth trading up for. I easily would have shelled out more for Absolute editions of Preacher, if they put 20-24 issues together like they did with Sandman.

If I had to do this over again, I would have kept my TPBs, because this new edition really isn't anything to get excited about. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing actually objectionable about the book, it looks good... except when you consider the price and compare other products and realize that there's just no reason to invest in this new collection.

More than I thoght

This 'book' format is a second edition of a Preacher collection, and it contains twelve issues--and Preacher only ran for about 75, side stories included. It's three complete storylines here. I was very surprised by how much of Preacher was in this one book. If you don't have Preacher but want to, it's a good buy.

Of The Good Book

A forbidden love, a secret godly terror, and war that has raged since the dawn of time. All these were ignorant to revered Jesse Custer until a genesis came bursting through his church doors. Now from the ashes he will find God and, be damned or not, and hold him accountable for what he has let happen.

This is Garth Ennis tamed. Of course I'm comparing Preacher to his later works like The Boys, The Pro or even Crossed. Although it may seem tame in comparison, it's still well written and well paced. Ennis just knows how to write character and give them their own voice, heroes and villains alike. He also knows how to write gore like a nasty SOB.

And the artwork is done brilliantly by Steve Dillon who is able to capture both the tender moments along with the carnage. Glenn Fabry's cover art is just as awesome, especially issue 3. However, this is not what you want to know. Well, maybe you do but if you came here overlooking the regular trade paperbacks, well sorry. Not trying to be mean, just sorry.

The hardcover Book One features Preacher issue 1 - 12 (which is the "Gone to Texas" and half of "Until the End of the World" books). The surface of the book, under the dust-jacket, is just "Preacher Book One" in gold plain lettering. Also included is a pinup gallery featuring art from Tim Bradstreet, Jim Lee, Dave Gibbons, and Bruce Timm just to name a few.

I'm sure this is aimed at newer fans and some of the older ones as well as a "collectible." But if you already have the trade paperbacks then just keep them unless you want the hardcover. This is a fantastic book regardless, even if just as having it as coffee table piece or as a newbie into the world of Preacher. The extras are awesome and I can't recommend this book more.

An in-depth review of the literature revealed that a substantial increase in the daily supply of vitamin D recommended for adult North Americans is urgently needed. Importantly, it showed that an increase of the magnitude envisaged would fall well within the range of values necessary for combining safety and efficacy.

The following examples illustrate the scope and tenor of the book:

· Evidence that calcitriol, a steroid hormone metabolized from 25-hydroxyvitamin D, inhibits proliferation of prostate cancer cells, as well as regulating the supply of calcium to bones and other organs.

· The capacity of calcitriol to induce cell cycle arrest (apoptosis) and decrease the harmfulness of insulin-like growth factors (IGF), known to be implicated in cancers of the prostate, the breast, and the colon.

· The significance of the term "gene-expression switch," considered in the light of the ability of calcitriol and its receptor to modulate the transcription of numerous genes within the nuclei of cells.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Edward Napke, B.Sc., M.D., D.P.H., Queen Elizabeth's Anniversary Medal (QEAM) This is a remarkable book that could be helpful in lowering the risk of prostate cancer and its progression in individuals subject to deficient circulating concentrations of vitamin D3 and its biologically active metabolites. The deficiencies are mainly the result of insufficient exposure to solar short wavelength ultraviolet-B radiation, without which vitamin D3 cannot be photosynthesized. Reinforcing this are inadequate intakes of supplementary vitamin D3 and the foods that contain it.

After acknowledging that many factors are implicated in prostate cancer, the author cites approximately 100 studies reported in scientific journals and reproduces geographically significant disease-specific statistics of mortality extracted from publications of the WHO and its affiliate, the IARC (International Agency for Research into Cancer).

The information thus assembled indicates that in countries in the northern and southern hemispheres, vitamin D3 deficiency is an overlooked environmental risk factor of major importance, particularly in middle-aged and elderly men whose place of residence is in the middle and higher latitudes (40 degrees and higher). Bibliographic references are given for all of the sources cited.

Despite the importance of the work in drawing attention to the dangers of vitamin D3 deficiency, not only with respect to prostate cancer but also to breast cancer, colorectal cancer, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, a variety of bone diseases and a growing list of other disorders, little is said about the author's personal experience with prostate cancer and bladder cancer, diagnosed in 1984 and 1986.

We sense that a gripping story has been left untold and must remain in the dark until this is done. There is a "hole in the narrative" that lessens the human and personal appeal of the book. I have brought this to the attention of the author, who is willing to rectify the omission in any subsequent edition.

My main criticism, however, is that he fails to distinguish consistently between the so-called "sunshine vitamin," namely vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), the history of which is summarized, and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol), a substance derived from yeasts and plants. All too often readers are expected to make do with the non-specific term vitamin D, when what is actually being discussed is D3.

It is from vitamin D3 that minute quantities of a short-lived, powerful steroid hormone, 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol), are repeatedly metabolized from the body's limited store of calcidiol, (25-hydroxyvitamin D3), its major circulating reservoir of the vitamin. The book shows that when the blood supply of calcidiol begins to wane, which tends to occur in the elderly in the late winter and early spring, there is a corresponding decrease in the concentration of calcitriol.

That is why residents of countries in the middle and high latitudes, particularly those where the winters are long and cold, need to build up a supply of calcidiol during the warm season sufficient to last the whole of the coming winter.

When circumstances prevent this, ensuring adequate daily intakes of vitamin D3- rich foods and supplements can be crucial. Readers are informed that their daily requirement of vitamin D3, expressed in international units, may be greatly in excess of the quantities they are actually obtaining, from sun exposure and nutrition.

African-North Americans and Afro-Caribbeans are shown to be at exceptionally high risk of deficiency. It is in these populations that the incidence and mortality rates of prostate cancer are reported to be the highest in the world.

The benefits derivable from adequate circulating concentrations of calcitriol in another common cancer are strikingly apparent in the results of a six-months long in-hospital study of female breast cancer patients. About the Author
Brian Buccellato is a writer and and illustrator, best known for his work as scribe on THE FLASH with co-writer and artist Francis Manapul. He has also written DETECTIVE COMICS, INJUSTICE: YEAR THREE and FOREVER EVIL: ROGUES REBELLION for DC Comics. As a colorist, he's worked for Marvel, DC, Vertigo, Top Cow, Image and Dynamite Entertainment. His recent coloring credits include ADVENTURE COMICS, HELLBLAZER, SUPERMAN and THE FLASH.

the plot has completely gone off the rails

The first year of Injustice was very good. Year two sagged and year three was truly awful. The series rebounded a bit with the appearance of the Greek pantheon in Year 4, volume 1, but has fallen back to the nadir of year three with this poorly plotted and scripted tale.

In short:
1) The Greek Gods have given Batman's group the advantage. Superman slinks off.
2) Zeus claims he is back and is outlawing the world religions. World leaders are aghast. People wonder if Batman has traded one tyrant for another (or to use Biblical terms, created a Golem)
3) Superman allies with Poseidon to fight Zeus. It is short lived. Any 3rd grader who likes the Gods could have told you that.
4) Harley Quinn is in Hades. Weak. Not sure why she has survived while other characters didn't.
5) Batman and Superman sort of unite to deal with Zeus. This is the most galling aspect of the story, as the entire series is predicated on Superman's excesses against liberty being fought against by Batman's freedom fighters. The two of them uniting to find a common opponent makes no sense.

If that wasn't enough, another universal threat shows up as well. They are writing to keep pumping out issues to sell, rather than tell a good story. I think there has been a terrible creative and editorial process. You should avoid this.

D.G. Fulford is a best-selling author and former columnist for the Los Angeles Daily News and New York Times News Service. Her first book, To Our Children's Children: Preserving Family Histories for Generations to Come, written with her brother, Bob Greene, is currently in its 40th printing. Fulford has been a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, Good Morning America, and National Public Radio.

Phyllis Greene became a first-time author at the age of eighty-two; she has written two books, including It Must Have Been Moonglow: Reflections on the First Years of Widowhood. She is the mother of three, the grandmother of eight, and the great-grandmother of one.

...she'd be DG Fulford and Phyllis Greene. This book warmed my heart and filled my soul with hope and love. I got Designated Daughter last night and read it straight through so I'm writing this before I start re-reading it again today! To see a mother and daughter grow so close at a time when so many families grow apart renewed my faith in everything from God to Early Bird Specials. This is a funny, illuminating, heart-breakingly beautiful look at aging from both sides of the spectrum. The Big Issues seem so much smaller and the Little Stuff seems so much more important now that I've read Designated Daughter.

Fall in love with life again!

Please please give yourself a great big treat and read this book. Today. I laughed out loud and wiped a few tears from my cheek. Simply put, after reading this book I fell madly in love with life again. The authors became my new best friends. Courage, hope and love are the best feelings in the whole wide world. If you have tucked them away for a while, do yourself a favor and read this book. Playing nice with others in the sandbox, laughing a little harder and hugging a hurt better are just the right things to do. So is reading this book.

I read and immediately reread this wonderful book.
The trials and the love and the sharing and letting it all "hang out" make it a must read.
The authors talk about sadness that most of us don't articulate...it must have helped them to write it..reading it made me laugh aloud and cry and learn to understand and handle the changes that come to us all as we age.
It's perfect for all generations.

Michael A. Joyce is a Class 1 licensed plumbing contractor in North Carolina with thirty three years of plumbing experience in commercial, industrial, and residential installations and repairs. He has authored several plumbing books and teaches a variety of plumbing seminars and classes throughout the country, including classes for the United States Pentagon, New York City hospitals and Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association (PHCC) of NC. Very Useful

I used this book to help me design and install the plumbing for my new home. I've been in the house six months and have not had any leaks, blockages, or other plumbing problems (knock on wood). Any questions? :)
