Inner magic

I have to give Grant Morrison credit -- few writers could turn a trip to the refrigerator into an epic fantasy adventure. But somehow he manages to do that in "Joe the Barbarian," deftly blurring the lines of fantasy and reality inside one young boy's head. It reads like a cross between "Alice in Wonderland" and "Lord of the Rings," but with more steampunk.

Joe is at home alone with his pet rat Jack. Joe also happens to be diabetic, and bullies stole his snacks earlier that day. When his blood sugar plummets, he struggles to get down the stairs despite his hallucinations and delusions. In his head, he is the legendary Dying Boy, prophesied to save a strange fantasy world from the evil King Death. Oh, and Jack is a giant talking warrior-rat who comes along to help him.

In the real world, Joe is seriously ill and stumbling through his home, trying to get some soda pop before he falls into a diabetic coma. His hallucinating brain sees everything around him -- a bathtub, a staircase, a vicious dog -- as being part of a vast fantasy world, where airpunk planes fly, dwarves are in steampunk submarines, and ruined cities lead into the final battle.

Will Joe and Jack survive -- both in the real world and in the fantasy one -- and what secrets will be revealed to them if they do?

"Joe the Barbarian" is a simple story, and the beauty of it is in the execution. Grant Morrison takes a simple everyday problem, and manages to expand it into an epic quest, in a world as colorful, wild and strange as a kid's imagination. He even throws in a surprising twist near the end, adding a new dimension to Joe's quest for survival.

Also, the artwork is gorgeous. The real world is dark, shadowy, and filled with torrential rain, while Joe's inner world is exploding with color, strange inventions (steampunk submarines!), and expansive bright skies that seem to go forever.

However, Morrison also gives you the feeling that this world is starting to crumble into chaos because of King Death, and we even get some glimpses of what he's turning it into. And while he inserts some fun comic relief (there's a "giant" dwarf, who is basically normal-sized) and breathtaking action scenes, we never forget that the stakes are very real, and that our hero could easily die.

Joe himself is a solid classic protagonist -- quiet, remote, artistic, and a little embittered by his dad's untimely death. But he also has a lot of courage, as evidenced by his standoff against his enemy. Jack is almost as well-rounded a character, even in the real world -- he's a sweet little rat who obviously loves his owner, worries about him, and even takes on a giant dog to defend him.

"Joe the Barbarian" is a gorgeous piece of work, and Grant Morrison obviously lavished it with care. Beautiful art and a likable young hero... and the most adorable rat you'll ever see.

Holding out for a hero

This world: Joe Manson is a high school boy, likes drawing, is diabetic, has a pet rat called Jack and no friends, has a single mother working to save their house while his father is buried in a military grave having died fighting overseas.

The other world: Joe the Barbarian is a prophet called "The Dying Boy" who must traverse mountains, castles full of cowardly inventors, submarines full of toilet dwarves, with his companion, a fighting warrior rat called Jack, dodging flying demons, laser gun fights, epic battles, to flood the land with light and the Fountain of Life, and destroy evil King Death.

Grant Morrison writes a hugely inventive story of fantastic proportions, throwing in tropes from every fantasy story ever written of the band of heroes on a quest to destroy evil and save kingdoms of innocents. Joe is diabetic and it seems that his low blood sugar has triggered a vivid hallucination as he struggles to go from his bedroom attic to the kitchen downstairs to drink a soda and keep him from going into hypoglycaemic shock. But anyone who's read Morrison before or knows anything about him, knows that he is a true believer in parallel worlds and that there's more to life than we can see with our eyes. This book mirrors that philosophy as the smallest things in the "real world" are brought to life in the "other world", for example Joe makes himself a bath but forgets to turn off the tap causing the water to pour from the tub into the room and down the stairs, creating a new waterfall across the mountains in the other world.

While there's very little explanation for the who what where and why of the story, and Morrison just plunges the reader from the real world into this fantasy world, I felt that the pure energetic gusto of the storytelling coupled with Sean Murphy's superb artwork made this book an exceptional read for pure creativity alone. The story makes some sense once you read it and realise that it's this boy's way of understanding and coping with his father's death, though Morrison wants the reader to also believe in the fantastic, that it's out there and it's real and it's symbols in this world mean that it exists just beyond our reach - a near death experience can bring us into it, however briefly.

I think that if the reader allows the force of Morrison and Murphy's imaginations wash over themselves, this book will be enjoyable though at times frustratingly melodramatic and incongruous. "Joe the Barbarian" is nothing if not ambitious in its scope and incredibly creative throughout, though not without its flaws.

Fabulous Short Series

I accidentally picked up and read issue number two a few months back, I was so intrigued by what I read that when the trade became available I had to own it. The story line is intricate enough that while I am reading to my kids that I am intrigued. I re-read some pages multiple times just to deduce that fine line between 'realities' that the main character has to deal with. The Story line is also easily understood by the kids (their version of it). The graphics are fabulous and provide endless 'eye candy'!

I have even bought extra copies to give out as Christmas gifts. Definitely 5 stars

About the Author
Now a household name, author and illustrator Mollie Katzen is widely credited with bringing vegetarian cooking into the mainstream. Born in Rochester, New York, she studied at the Eastman School of Music, Cornell University and the San Francisco Art Institute, where she received a B.F.A. in painting. Katzen published her first cookbook, The Moosewood Cookbook, in 1977, which showed millions of Americans that eating healthy doesn't have to mean sacrificing taste or style. Magnificent!

I want to make and eat everything in this cookbook. We tried the recipe for grilled stuffed endive. It was delicious and easy to make. Each recipe has the simplicity and practicality you expect from Mollie Katzen, but also a lusciousness that comes from bringing out the best in each vegetable. It is mostly side dishes, but there are also risottos, pasta dishes and stews. A plate with two or more of these recipes on it would be pure heaven. If you love vegetables (or want to love vegetables) and need some variety in what you make, you will love this book!

GREAT VEGGIE COOKBOOK

I was looking for creative ways to get more fresh veggies into our diet and this cookbook solved that problem. The recipes are easy to follow, ingredients are readily available seasonally, and the end results are delicious. The leek chips are fabulous, the shiitake slaw was wonderful, the spaghetti squash with carmelized onions was an unusual way to prepare spaghetti squash and got rave reviews from my family. We are shopping at our local farmers markets now for fresh produce and this book is a great asset to preparing those fresh veggies in a healthy, creative and delicious way!

Simple enough for beginners

With its hand-lettered pages and illustrations, this book is aesthetically pleasing, but it's not as informative or creative as the Moosewood Cookbook that Katzen worked on. The recipe selection is small and simple, good for someone who's interested in branching out from frozen bags of veggies, but more experienced cooks will need a little more. I did appreciate the simplicity and elegance of the recipes, though.

Implementation of effective drought management policies requires both advanced technologies and appropriate methods. Monitoring and forecasting systems, practical tools for risk assessment, as well as simple and objective criteria to select and implement appropriate drought mitigation measures are key elements for a successful drought management strategy.

These key issues have been tackled by universities and public agencies involved in the EU projects Sedemed and Sedemed II (Programme Interreg IIIB MEDOCC), aimed at the definition of an integrated network for real time monitoring of drought, the development of common methodologies for drought analysis and forecasting, as well as the definition of proper mitigation strategies for the Mediterranean countries.

The book presents the main outcomes of such projects with a special focus on: drought monitoring and forecasting techniques at different spatial scales; new or modified agrometeorological indices and remote sensing technique for drought identification and characterization; tools to improve surface water resources management under drought conditions; methods and tools for groundwater resources monitoring and management, based on hydrogeological and hydrodynamics characteristics of aquifers; general criteria to select and implement mitigation strategies to prevent or minimize drought impacts.

About the Author
Stephen "Steve-O" Glover has made a career of doing crazy, dangerous, unhealthy, ill-advised stunts for the amusement, delight and occasional disgust of audiences around the world. Besides being one of the breakout stars of Jackass' three-season run on MTV, Steve-O starred alongside fellow Jackass alum Chris Pontius in the extreme travel show Wildboyz, which ran on MTV for four seasons and his own Dr. Steve-O series on the USA Network. In 2009, the newly sober Steve-O lasted six weeks on the ABC reality series, Dancing With the Stars, despite the fact that he couldn't dance to save his life. He figured prominently in the first two Jackass feature films, both of which debuted at #1 at the box office, and will be a main player again in the third installment, Jackass 3D, which hits theatres in October 2010. He's also been a frequent guest on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the Howard Stern Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Loveline. Professional Idiot is his first book.

Amazing and inspiring

I am a female that is not that big on the Jackass thing. But am a loyal fan to Howard Stern and hearing his interview had to buy this book. I figured it would be a good comedy at least. I read it in two days and could not put it down. There was humor yes. But the book itself draws you into his life, mind heart and soul as most really good books do and touches your heart. I loved this book and recommend even if you do not know who he is or why he is famous read it anyway. It shined a bright light to addiction ( to drugs, fame and life)and the reasons and situations that come from it in an honest and heartfelt narrative. Good Job Steve O

Insightful and at times hilarious!

We all know Steve-O as the self-abusive, stunt-performing drug addict from Jackass, and that's about all. However, through his book, we learn all about how he set out to set the world on fire and stuck to his plan. Lucky for him, it all worked out!

Written in his self-effacing and brutally honest voice Steve tells it how it all began, the wild tales during his journey and how his drive to succeed almost killed him. For those of us that have followed the ups and downs of his career the book serves as the perfect roadmap of Steve's climb to fame, crash, and redemption.

No punches are pulled and the brutal honesty had this reader loathing, hating, and loving Steve. The risks (both physically and financially) that Steve-O took to accomplish his goals are not seen by most people, who take the safer route to stability and comfort!

A must read for any American who was ever afraid to live life to the fullest!

The more of this Redneck humor I read,the more I enjoy it.I have written reviews on several Redneck and Southern Humor books;but none are better than what the author of this gem,Jeff Foxworthy,gives us.
The layout of the book,the wonderful illustrations and all the one-liners result in a book that is great to sit back with "a cool one" and have some great laughs.
The author has come up with a great way to introduce these one-liners;that would be:
You might be a Redneck if....
"You use your daughter's wedding as an excuse to buy a new
shotgun."
"You've ever done your Christmas shopping at a truck stop."
"You can take your bra off while driving."
"You talk to your dog more than your wife."

You Might Be a Redneck If... is a funny collection of the standup comedian Jeff Foxworthy's, you might be a redneck if jokes. There are many laugh out loud funny redneck jokes here - so if you want to stick a few in your back pocket to be the funny guy or gal at a party, this is a good source of material.

While reading these jokes on paper is not nearly as funny as seeing Foxworthy perform them live, this book will provide you a few laughs in your leisure reading time.

...perhaps just a bit too expensive. The book is large and chock full of material; so the price is somewhat reasonable. It's just that this book is what most would consider a bathroom reader. And most of us don't pay that much for bathroom readers. Still, this is a fantastic book; full of charming ridiculousness. It's offensive in places, but that's comedy. It's not meant to be a moral guide for humanity at large. Jeff's poking fun at the type of person he is, and that's what makes him brilliant. There are some great one-liners to be found here. And I'd buy it again; perhaps used next time, but I'd still purchase another copy.

Good in-depth coverage is provided on topics such as displays, fly-by-wire controls, navigation, autopilots and flight management systems and system integration. It provides much theoretical information and calculations, particularly aimed at graduate and post graduate students. There is also a chapter on UAVs, vehicles which are rightly described as being "dependent totally on avionic systems". These are currently and increasingly used in military applications and also, in the future, for civil applications. [...] The book is very well illustrated in both black and white and colour. Very comprehensive lists of reference documents are provided. A glossary of terms and a list of symbols are provided which are particularly useful to the student readers.
