Haven't even finished it - but love it!

I bought this book last night on my nook. It was the first book I've ever bought on an electronic reader and I'm already a little sad because this is a book that I want to pass around to others. I'm a school counselor, a mother of 2 young boys, and I very much relate to how Katherine feels while raising her children. It was nice to see that the curtain has been drawn back - to show the inside of a family struggling to like a child that they love. I love the research that she did for this book, her casual, yet intellectual way of presenting information, and she seems to be very current on her research.

I love how she approaches helping her son from a systematic view. He's not the only one that is making bad choices and she recongizes this - and starts to change the way she views situations, her son, and her reactions.

If you are struggling with a child that is suffering from ADD, or that you THINK might be suffering from ADD, buy this book. Read it, feel less alone, and you'll get great information on how to help the most important person in your life.

Full Speed Ahead!

"Buzz" is a book that is refreshingly real, devoid of trite sentimentality and a self congratulatory tone. It is extraordinarily well researched and maintains a hopeful, yet serious and objective tone at all times. At no attempt is any effort made to sugar coat the problems that Buzz's (born 1995) ADD/ADHD cause him and how ADD/ADHD impacts his brother Max (b. 1998) and Katherine and Jack Ellison.

Katherine Ellison is a gifted writer who brings to the table her years of experience as a freelance writer. She was born in 1957 when the world was just coming to terms with "hyperactivity" as ADD was then called. She recognizes these problems in her son Buzz as well as the additional diagnostic onus of Oppositional Defiance Disorder or ODD. Buzz knows how to rile people up and, in one memorable meltdown he had when his Game Boy was taken away, Buzz, then 9 called Child Protective Services to report abuse.

All of this was taking place when Katherine was recovering from cancer, which she successfully battled twice during the boys' early years. Even so, Katherine and Jack never flag in their quest to help Buzz. Treatments include medication and neurofeedback, both of which have positive effects on their son.

Max, as do many siblings of children with major problems delighted in hounding and harassing Buzz, in turn pushing Buzz' buttons. I admit I did derive a certain amount of satisfaction when Max, after scratching Buzz' face was made the butt of a clever prank by Buzz. Buzz set Max' clock to ring at 2:00. At times, I thought Max was asking for it, like when he said in response to Katherine calling him her angel that "Buzz was their devil" and that he, Max "was a good guy and Buzz was a bad guy." I didn't like that at all and, while I understood, I also derived a measure of satisfaction at how Buzz got back at him. There were times when I thought Max was really asking for it when he called Buzz names; said he lacked intelligence (which wasn't true); said where Buzz was sure to hear him that "the Omega-3 wasn't working" and called Buzz "ADD! Special!" and sundry epithets underscoring the stigma of having a neurological condition. I really didn't like it when Max wiped himself with Buzz' toothbrush. Those were times when I felt Buzz' anger at him was justified.

I also liked the way Katherine realized that scolding Max, who most likely appeared to have it all in Buzz' eyes (Max is good/he does his homework as soon as he walks in/he knows how to tell about his day in a way that is well received/he plays the violin and doesn't have ADD/ODD) had a positive effect on Buzz, more potent, she says "than any pill or other treatment." She talks about her own siblings, all of whom are in the medical field.

Katherine Ellison talks about what worked for her son, what specifically helped Buzz to the point that he was able to thrive. She describes his horrific early school years, which were exacerbated by the boy's teachers demonstrating a lack of understanding as well as a lack of imagination or willingness to spark an interest in him. One teacher is lauded for her creative efforts and readers can't help but cheer at her clever resourcefulness.

I liked the list of resources that are included at the back of the book, such as fish oils and Omega-3. At no time does Katherine Ellison promise that these treatments are a panacea for all who suffer from ADD/ADHD as well as ODD. She talks about what worked for her and for her son and other resources that might prove to be helpful to others.

This book is mostly about research, the history of how ADD/ADHD treatments have evolved over time and about compassion and tolerance as well as the negative emotions of revenge, anger and desperation. This is a book that every educator, parent and medical professional should read. It is a book that the world needs.

An absorbing and enlightening memoir about life with ADHD

The only thing more exciting than being the first person to review a book on Amazon is being the first reviewer of a book that deserves five stars. "Buzz" has everything going for it: It's well written, scrupulously researched, and it tells an engrossing and hopeful story -- without being saccharine or "inspirational."

The deal: Katherine Ellison, freelance writer and married mother of two preteen boys, has attention deficit disorder (ADD). Her older son, called "Buzz" in the book, has ADD too, as well as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). He's an expert at pushing her buttons. After one particularly bad parenting moment, Ellison decides that for her next book, she will use her journalistic skills to learn more about how her son's mind works -- and, hopefully, how to help him. Over the next year or so, Ellison researches ADD/ADHD and, to a lesser extent, ODD. She and her son also try several ADD treatments, including medication and neurofeedback. (They both help a lot, by the way.)

"Buzz" contains a lot of the information you might find in a standard "how to parent your ADD/ADHD" child book. But what makes it worth five stars is that it's really about Ellison's own journey toward understanding her son and herself. In the process, her relationship with Buzz improves tremendously. Probably not coincidentally, Buzz's behavior improves as well, although at no point does Ellison suggest that he's becoming an angel. Ellison never offers a prescription for "curing" ADD or ODD, but she does talk about what works.

This isn't just a book about ADD. It's also about mindfulness, compassion, love -- and getting stuff done. Anyone who lives and/or works with kids could both enjoy it and benefit from it. I'd particularly like to send a copy to my son's fifth-grade teacher -- in fact, I think I will.

Great book no matter how old you are

Coming from a northern family into a southern family is a huge challenge. I ordered this book to try to understand my mother in law's way of life. the book is informative, educational and somewhat hilarious. I understood through it how long a spell was, what down yonder meant , and why she said she reckoned something. I fairly certain you won't need a recipe for Sunday hominy using a fireplace anytime soon , but its worth looking at how the people did it in the 1800's. In one chapter it tells exactly how lye hominy was made. This is one that will hold your interest and fulfil your curiosity.

Unique and Wonderful Recipes

My favorite recipe from this book is its pastry crust. It is a very unique recipe, as are so many of the recipes in this cookbook. It turns out wonderful. This book contains sauces, dressings, syrups, and many kinds of gravies; an assortment of vegetable recipes; breads (Spoon breads and Cornbread, quick breads and yeast bread); breakfasts; meat dishes; desserts; canning recipes, including jams, preserves, relishes and pickles; and some "miscellaneous" ones, such as homemade yeast, candies and snacks, beverages, and even a love potion.

Cheryl Rogers-Barnett, daughter of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, grew up in the San Fernando Valley where Trigger was her pet. Today, she and her husband, Larry, travel the United States in their RV making appearances at major western film and music festivals.

Ken Beck is an editor for The Tennesseean in Nashville, Tennessee, and a freelance writer.

With coauthor Jim Clark, he has written Aunt Bee's Mayberry Cookbook, The All-American Cowboy Cookbook, Mary Ann's Gilligan's Island Cookbook, Aunt Bee's Delightful Desserts, Aunt Bee's Mealtime in Mayberry, and Mayberry Memories.

Jim Clark founded The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club in 1979 and has written numerous books, including eight related to The Andy Griffith Show. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee.

I think Andrew Klavan is the best juvenile fiction author writing on the Christian market. Every book he has written for that age group has been a terrific read.

This book is the first book in a new trilogy, and he again has hit one out of the park. The plot is totally different than his other books, using modern technology and gaming to weave an exciting plot. As with his other novels I have read, I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting, wishing that the next book was out so I could start it.

The book isn't overtly Christian, though it does have some Christian content, but it is a clean book that has great moral lessons in it. The main character is likable and has great character and willingness to sacrifice himself for the good of others.

I tend to enjoy good juvenile fiction, but this is the kind of books that most adults would enjoy, and definitely teenagers. After I read Mindwar, I passed it onto my fourteen year old niece who loved it and announced she can't wait til the next book comes out.

Unlike The Homelanders Series, this book did not have an ending that leaves the reader hanging, but has a very cool ending. It is obvious though that the story isn't over and will pick up in the next book.

A Good Novel, but Potentially a Better Graphic Novel or Movie

Rick Dial has had a bad six months. A truck T-boned his car, resulting in back surgery, crutches, and the end of a promising future in college football before it even started. Topping it off, his college-professor father has skipped town with an old flame, leaving him, his mom, and his kid brother in emotional turmoil and straitened financial circumstances. To cope, Rick closes himself in his bedroom and plays endless hours of video games online.

Which brings him to the attention of a secretive agency within the U.S. government. The agency has been tasked with a project called MindWar, whose purpose is to defeat the Realm, a game-like virtual reality created by a Russian genius named Kurodar. Unfortunately, Kurodar created the Realm so that terrorists could take control of the good guys’ computer systems and wreak real-world havoc. The only way to defeat the Realm is to portal into the game. Who better to win the game than a gamer like Rick Dial?

The deeper Rick goes into the Realm, however the greater the real-world dangers he faces, and the more he realizes that his bad six months—his car accident, his dad leaving home—are not what they first seemed to be.

MindWar is the first book in a trilogy by Andrew Klavan. It is written for young adults and has a faith-based perspective. On the whole, I thought it was an entertaining read, though I couldn’t help but wonder whether it might make for a better graphic novel or movie than a print book. The virtual reality Klavan describes is so intense that showing it might be a better way to go than saying it, if you know what I mean.

Here’s to hoping that some faith-based movie production company picks the MindWar Trilogy up and turns it into a entertaining film series!

Game On!!

There are two things that immediately occurred to me as I started reading this book. One, the main character is a teen boy and there are very few books I've read from a guy's perspective. I really liked it. Two, this book is the first of a trilogy and I want to read the entire series. I'm also into video games even though I'm a casual gamer and I've never set any records, I play because it's fun or I return the game. Even though you don't have to appreciate video games to enjoy this book, I do believe you should have a tiny interest in them or this book may not have the same affect on you as the reader.

Rick is a special teen. He loves his family dearly and he once had faith in God, but he's had a rough time lately and everything he knows has changed. First his dad left their family with only a note explaining his absence. Then he gets in a car accident that paralyzes his legs. Now he sits in his room all day avoiding his kid brother, Raider, who adores everything about him despite his moodiness and his mom mopes around the house quietly watching him, with gentle suggestions about going outside for fresh air and shaving once in a while. Rick (who was once the star football player in high school) is no longer interested in sports, in talking to his girlfriend who is also an athlete going to college on a scholarship, or in forgiving his dad.

One day, he finally goes out for a brief walk instead of yelling at his adorable kid brother and he literally runs into Ms. Ferris and Juliet Seven (am I even allowed to mention their names?? This is SOOOOOOO top secret) and life as he knows it is forever changed once again. Little does he know that the offer he gets from the MindWar Project will lead him to self-discovery and strength he didn't know he had. Is Rick really the hero they say he is or will he fail this too?

This is my first time reading Klavan, but wow did I enjoy it! It's easy to read in one sitting, the chapters are short for those of us who only like to take breaks when finishing a chapter, and even though it's a thriller, it's also got LOTS of heart in it. One other thing, the characters in this story NEED faith in order to survive both physically and emotionally. Without faith, the characters are in danger of becoming evil corrupt, obsessed, paranoid, lost, and danger of losing hope. That may not sound bad, but when you're in a desperate situation trying to save the world and everyone you love, faith is the most important thing you can have.

There are two settings in this book. Real life, RL, and the Realm. The Realm is the computer/mad man's imagination/video game/controlled by evil/guarded by evil/the only place to find answers to stop the bad guy and shut him down. I really loved the Realm despite the danger it presented! It's so beautiful, Rick is able to use his legs (think Avatar) and he finds his faith while inside the Realm!! I found it interesting that the government trained soldiers and their finest to make it in the Realm and none of them could complete it successfully. However, an 18 year old kid who has been playing video games for 4 months nonstop has what it takes to get the job done.

There ARE monsters in this book that are tangible and creepy, but there's also good in this book that is equally tangible (I considered both sides rightly balanced). I didn't consider anything in the story to be graphic or horrific, but my heart did beat faster as I read what happened to Rick. The second time he goes into the Realm, he stays too long accidentally and briefly loses his mind. That had me nervous for his sake. There is one character who becomes demonic in the Realm, but he's a terrorist/assassin in RL so what he becomes in the Realm suits him.

Character I liked least in this one.....Commander Jonathan Mars. The only thing I like about this guy is his last name. He's one of the good guys and is in charge of MindWar, but he is not a nice man. At one point, he threatens Rick's loved one. So when Mars has one last conversation with Rick, he makes it clear to the Commander that he understands the man is a patriot, but that if he ever threatens Rick's family again he will beat him to death. After all Rick has been through, it's a threat he will definitely follow through with!

I truly enjoyed Favian and Mariel in this book. I have an idea of who they are, but I'll have to wait for the next book to figure that out because this one doesn't explain them. They help save Rick's life several times and they are his companions in the Realm.

This was one of the best things about the book for me. Each section are named referencing video games, SOOOOOO clever!!!

It was utterly amazing to me how Rick sacrifices himself for his family, for Favian and Mariel. His character does a complete transformation and it was a total pleasure reading his journey. After being bitter for months, it was beautiful how he is able to forgive and make peace. He also does some amazing stunt work in the Realm that had my eyes wide. I was rooting for him the entire time and I'm so glad how things concluded in Book 1 :) I wasn't sure I'd like this book, but I'm so glad I took a chance on it and now truly looking forward to the next book!

very useful for traveling in Paris with kids

I looked at the various different books for traveling in Paris with kids and was really happy with this purchase. We went with our three kids, aged 2, 4 and 13. The book was clearly laid out and gave useful practical information on things we wanted to do. I particularly liked the section at the beginning on things that she would have wanted to know. For example, information on taxis, eating out, etc. Some of the adult guide books (Lonely Planet, etc.) just have way too much information overload to be helpful when traveling with kids.

The Only Way to Go

Thanks to Ms. Uhlmann for her unerring advice on what to eat, see, do and try in Paris. My seven- and ten-year-olds had an amazing time, which needless to say, made the vacation a delight for me, too. I've been to Paris a dozen times, yet going there with my kids gave me a fresh, fun perspective on the City of Light. With any luck, there'll be Rome for Kids, Madrid for Kids, London for Kids coming out any day.

Huge Disappointment

I spent a whole year preparing for a summer in PAris with my daughter. I wanted our summer to be perfect, so I bought absolutely every book on the subject. Some were great, some not so much; but this one was by far the worst guide I bought! It says absolutely nothing!! It is 149 pages long, but in reality one could compress the contents into about 40 or 50 pages (the rest are non-informative pictures and blank spaces...).

I really regret having paid almost twenty dollars for a book that wasn't helpful at all and which I didn't even bother taking along. Yes, it was THAT bad.

Informative and easy to follow format

This is geared towards getting your kids to eat plant based meals, but I think it is helpful for all of us.

We live in a world where there are so many by-products, hormones and chemicals used in our food, no wonder we have become so unhealthy.

I enjoyed this book because it gives helpful advice without being preachy or pushy or shoving things down your throat. (Pardon the pun.)

Easy to read and follow. I highly recommend young and old, if you are interested in adding more plant based meals to your life.
