Purrrrrfect
By Anarchy in the US
I will admit, as much as I enjoy Catwoman and the other Bat-family characters like Nightwing, Red Robin, and Batgirl...I'm a hard sell to pick up their individual comic series. I thoroughly enjoy reading about them, but outside of reading Batman by himself or for the purpose of reading about them for a major cross-over event, I just can't convince myself to spend money on picking up the other characters of the bat universe. But a friend of mine offered me this book at my comic shop for about 60% off, and coupled with the fact this was written by up-in-coming Ed Brubaker (at that time) with Darwin Cooke, well I decided to give it a shot. And for all intensive purposes, it was absolutely worth it.

CATWOMAN: TRAIL OF THE CATWOMAN collects:
Catwoman: Selina's Big Score
Catwoman (Book 1): The Dark End of the Street (Issues #1-4 and backups from Detective Comics #759-762)
Catwoman (Book 2): Crooked Little Town (Issues #5-9. Issue #10 and Secret Files and Origins not included here in C:TotC)

(If you want a better detail of the book, check on each of the links for more detailed reviews. I'll keep my descriptions short.)

"Selina's Big Score" is about Selina, who is considered "dead" and broke, coming back into Gotham to plan a big heist. The type of heist that she could retire off of. She gets a crew together for some help to plan this heist, including a guy named Stark that helped Selina become the person she is today. And did I mention this heist is against a crime boss? What we get is a great noir, Ocean's 11 heist-type story that is fun to watch unfold, and coupled with Cooke's drawings, are beautiful to take in.

Detective Comics backups #759-762, what is called "Trail of the Catwoman" is a short 4-part mini series about re imagined character Slam Bradley (a character created in 1937, a year before Superman) who's a detective looking into the whereabouts of Catwoman's/Selina's death. This a great read. I utterly enjoyed what Brubaker has done for this character. A very old schooled tough as nails, multi-layered detective that I enjoyed watching. His appearance in Selina's Big Score is confusing, but once you read this entire backup stories, go back to Selina's Big Score and it will all make sense. I'm interested to read more about Bradley in the future.

Catwoman issues #1-4 is about Selina making her place in Gotham, with the Catwoman persona finding a new outlook on life, while issues #5-9 deal with Selina looking into crimes about corrupt cops. These issues explain the current modern Catwoman costume and ideology. What I like about this is the new look isn't simply an aesthetic more practical look for today's audiences, it also has a certain significance to Catwoman's new outlook on life. These issues show Selina and Catwoman are two different people, as well her slowly taking justice into her hands. Catwoman's ideas are similar to shades of grey as a thief (Catwoman) and as a good person (Selina Kyle), not like the police or Batman who see the world in a black-and-white manner. This ideology makes a great conflicting character, all the while slowly building herself up as a crime fighter of sorts, that plays out in a "Year One" origin way for Catwoman. She's not used to being on the right side of the law, and she does make some mistakes in the process, but it's really fun to watch her slowly evolving into a smart, savvy, and layered character from simply being a jewel thief that'd pop her head into random situations.

Like I mentioned before,I had no extensive knowledge concerning Catwoman's background (except for Catwoman: When in Rome (Batman) because I emjoyed Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman: Dark Victory so much, I had to pick that book up), but Brubaker finds a great medium where anyone can open this book up and get caught up to speed in no time flat. Added to that, Brubaker adds Batman: Year One for continuity that makes it oh so more fun to read. And anyone who loves golden age or silver age comics will love Cooke's drawings and art influence on the rest of the series to come. The book has some serious tones considering the noir elements the book has, but the art influence makes it so you don't take too seriously and anyone could enjoy it (or even syndicate it for a cartoon actually).

The only grip people might have is every issue has the production labels on them. I have no problem with this, since it tells us who did what for every issue (Brubaker wrote ever issue, and although more than half the book is predominately drawn by Cooke, the artist inkers change up quite abit). It doesn't take away from the book at all, but it's there.

CATWOMAN: TRAIL OF THE CATWOMAN VOL.1 is a pleasant read and beautiful work of art. I've always enjoyed Catwoman, but after reading about her in her solo material, I love her even more. She sort of reminds me of Marvel's Daredevil now, in that where Batman watches over all of city of Gotham (similar to Spider-Man for New York), she watches over the East side of town only. Now I'm really interested to read all of Brubakers run of Catwoman up til issue #37. If you enjoy detective/crime noir stories, your going to love this book. Here's hoping for vol.2 in the future.

Modern Catwoman begins here!
By Robert J. Barrett
The stories reprinted in this volume made huge waves in the comics scene when they were first published in the early 2000's. Darwyn Cooke and Ed Brubaker, both master storytellers whose resumes speak for themselves, took to the task of breathing new life into the Selina Kyle character, and the Catwoman for the modern generation was born.

The stories contained here have ties to both the 1990's "Catwoman" series, as well as "Batman: Year One", but give the reader plenty of information to maintain awareness of what is currently happening. In short--if you loved those previous stories, you'll love that they are referenced here...and if this is your first time reading Catwoman, you'll still be able to follow and enjoy this book!

Brubaker and Cooke managed to pinpoint the ideal Selina Kyle for the modern age here--an anti-hero who has seen more of the ugly side of life than Batman has, and therefore has less restrictions on what she will and will not resort to...but with enough heart to make a stand for those less capable than herself. "Robin Hood" definitely comes to mind as Catwoman takes it upon herself to defend people who Batman would deem, "Far from innocent, though victims."

This series took the industry by storm a decade ago, and gave Catwoman new legs to stand on even today. It only gets better from here, so hopefully enough people will buy this book so that DC makes it a priority to release a "Volume 2".

Fantastic volume: great story, awesome art.
By BlueFairy
Premise: Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, has been out of town for a while. After faking her own death, she's been laying low, but now it's time to get control of her life again. She needs a big job to get back on her feet, before she can even think about whether she wants to let being Catwoman become part of her life again. Collects Selina's Big Score, Detective Comics (backup feature) 759-762 and Catwoman 1-9.

I adored this collection. The art, mostly by Darwyn Cooke, fits perfectly with the noir tone of the stories, and the mix of mystery, crime, romance and adventure is perfect for Catwoman.

The stories are split roughly into three sections, as they were published originally. The first is one complete story: Selina's Big Score. You can see the first few pages here. The second focuses on a private detective named Slam Bradley who's investigating the "death" of Selina Kyle and it takes place concurrently with the first section. The third section brings in more characters and starts a series of adventures about Selina starting to operate in Gotham again as Catwoman.

You don't have to know Catwoman's history to enjoy these stories; this was a bit of an in-continuity new start for her. I wasn't personally a huge fan of Catwoman's revamped origin circa Batman:Year One, but these stories reframe those pieces and later developments in a way that ties all the different takes on the character together, leaving a coherent story of a strong, complicated woman with friends, enemies, and a personal moral code.

The supporting characters fill out the stories without overwhelming the star. The return of her friend Holly in the second part is a good touch, I like bringing in Dr. Thompson, and the other new and re-purposed characters fit well into the setting.

Also, Batman was really well handled, which made me happy. Every so often he appears on the outskirts of the stories; he cares about Selina but won't step in where he's not wanted. It's a really nice portrayal of their on-again, off-again relationship at a time when they're more off than on.

I really can't say enough about the art. It's fluid and full or motion, Selina is sexy and powerful without ever looking ridiculous. The writing is strong: funny, poignant and action-packed.

If you love Catwoman or have always wanted to, or if you just like crime/noir stories, you should consider checking this out.
