Bohm's extraordinary potential and modern statistical physics

This book is an excellent summary - often in depth -- of modern themes in statistical mathematical physics. Its overall theme is the intimate connection between concepts of quantum fluctuations, expressed via Fisher information, diffusion processes, etc., on one hand, to the so-called "quantum potential" of Bohm on the other. A tremendous range of modern physical theory is presented, of which but a tiny subset can be mentioned in this review. The concept of the quantum potential was championed by D. Bohm as a link between classical and quantum theory, and is a trajectory-based version of elementary quantum mechanics (the trajectories existing at least as a handy "illusion," according to the author.). The Bohm potential has lately been used for similar purposes by Reginatto and Hall, and also to derive an "exact" version of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Concepts of information (Shannon- and Fisher- varieties) and entropy are widely used throughout. The Bohm potential is also used in the duality theory of Faraggi and Matone and in many other concepts of modern quantum theory. The view of physics afforded by the Extreme physical information (EPI) approach of Frieden is objectively and factually summarized. Quantum fluctuation theory is widely used, in application to diffusion theory and stochastic electrodynamics. So also is quantum field theory, in particular work by Nikolic.

This is predominantly a book of mathematical theory, which therefore contains many equations. These are both set out and located within the text. However, the notation is straightforward for any graduate-level theoretical physicist or mathematician, and the writing style is informal and (as a result) informative. There is a wealth of expository material on the aims and accomplishments of the theories. I heartily recommend the book to any physicist or mathematician who wants an in-depth view of today's statistical physics, particularly its tie-ins to the Bohm potential.

One of the Strongest Stories in the Series

Gotham Central was one of the best comic series going. Told from the perspective of the Gotham City PD detectives who are trying their best to keep a city that is continually on the brink of madness from going over the edge, it reads like a script to NYPD Blue. If Batman has more than a page of ink per three issue series, it is amazing. And when the caped crusader makes a rare appearance, it isn't always a welcomed one. Afterall when your in the GCPD, you don't have the tools, the gadgets, the freedom from due process, or the backing of the Justice League...you have a gun, a heart, a brain, and a lot of guts.

You live with the knowledge that there is a vigilante who makes you look incompetent; a myth that has brought a level of craziness into your city that did not exist before his arrival; and you live in a constant mixed state of respect and loathing for "The Bat." It was a great series and this TPB is the best of it.

I almost wish that this TPB did not have Joker on the cover holding the sniper rifle. The reveal of him as the sniper terrorizing the streets of Gotham during the busy Christmas shopping season is one of the beset reveals in comics. It quickly pushes the stakes over the top and makes you feel for the characters. But even knowing he is coming will not detract from the greatness of this read. Enjoy!

Superb procedural set in town of abnormal procedures.

This second volume in a hardcover series collecting the totality of "Gotham Central", DC's landmark series focussing on the frontline detectives of the Gotham Police Department's Major Crimes Unit, continues in the tradition established by the first. Namely, excellence. Slightly longer than the previous one, this volume collects issues 11 to 22 of the series. Separate, Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka are two of the best writers in comics; their rare collaborations (and they are co-writing for most of this one) are always exemplary. Some spoilers follow.

The first volume, after the introductories stories familiarizing the audience with the concept and the initial main cast, was capped with "Half a Life", Greg Rucka's Eisner-winning Renee Montoya story, which is often thought of as "Gotham Central"'s finest piece. With her initial spotlight story over, Montoya figures very little into the events of this volume. The primary focus here is on Brubaker's shift, especially Marcus Driver and Romy Chandler. We're also introduced to a number of new characters, such as a detective with family ties to the Mafia. The work-life of the division is always exceptionally rendered, with rivalries of various types (Sarge's frustrated career ambitions), and allusions to and glimpses of personal lives.

Plotwise, the series alternates between regular crimes and crimes involving members of Batman's rogues gallery. Two-Face and Mr. Freeze were the most prominent in the first volume. Freeze's story is briefly revisited here. The title of this volume supplies the name of one of the major villains present here; also around are the Mad Hatter and the Penguin. Batman is a vague presence whose existence sometimes functions as an anticlimax to the drama: and this is intentional, I think. Keep in mind that whenever a supervillain is involved, there's a whole Batman story going on that we don't see. In Batman's own stories, we follow him as he cracks the case; here we follow the cops as they do the same work, only to be frequently beaten to the punch and denied any real catharsis. Indeed, the fallout of the Joker story is explicitly about how the Joker (and, by extension, most supervillains) treat the cops as simply an audience (or pawns) in a chess game with the Dark Knight. It's on the smaller cases that they can generally get a bit more dramatic closure. Another aspect of the mythos, the constant survival of the horrible monsters that Batman routinely apprehends, is likewise milked for drama. Batman's presence has other effects, as shown by a one-off story narrated by the Bat-signal operator, who has begun to daydream about him.

One of the most interesting things about this series focussing on the Gotham PD is the relative absence from the cast of its two most widely-known members: Commissioner Gordon is at the moment retired from his job, and Detective Harvey Bullock retired in disgrace before the series began. Bullock makes a return appearance here, as one of his unsolved cases resurfaces. This is a poignant reunion wiht Montoya, who still has issues with what he did to get fired, but also a subversion of expectations regarding this sort of story. Bullock is a shambling drunk who still nurses an interest in the case, and is convinced the Penguin was behind it, but it turns out he's wrong. He proves virtually irrelevant to solving it; it's Driver and co. who make the catch. The resolution to said case is unexpectedly haunting.

One of the most important aspects of the series' success is the art of Michael Lark. Typical American comics art depends a lot on colourful costumes (and skin tones) to differentiate between characters, but the mundane atmosphere of this title leaves little room for that. And despite this, Lark mostly manages to give everyone a distinct look, whether through facial structure, hair and skin colour, or some tic (such as a pipe); though readers will probably still find themselves squinting or doublechecking at some of the standard white guys. It's absolutely integral to the success of the series, as much as Brubaker and Rucka's writing (if anything, I find Lark's renditions of Batman and the rogues to be less impressive).

Best cop show around

This book is just fantastic. It probably stands on its own, although Book 1 is also great and so you should probably go get that one first.

If you like comic books and the superheroes of Gotham City, this is a must-read, because of how well it shows a new perspective on familiar superhero stories. The cops of the Major Crimes Unit are real people, with no superpowers but with talent and dedication for their job. They can't wait around for Batman to fix everything, and even when Batman does show up, they're left with a frustrating mess. In this book you see the frustration of people who are supposedly Batman's allies but don't get any of the benefits of Batcave technology or super toys to use on the beat.

Even if you aren't interested in Batman, it's still a great book. It's like a TV cop show, except way better, almost at the level of the best, like HBO's The Wire and BBC's Prime Suspect. The banter among the detectives is very well-written, the characters are well-developed and believable, and the cases have great twists and turns.

The art, on most issues by Michael Lark, is not the usual superhero comic style, but is a bit dark and rough, and I think fits the stories very well. There are a ton of characters, and they're drawn distinctively enough that I didn't have much of a problem keeping track of who's who (although the personnel page in the front helped). The page layouts are also well-designed, pacing the stories just right.

This volume covers three major cases (with a one-off issue that is kind of an introduction). I won't give anything away, but I thought each of them were very good, and there are interesting character stories running through the whole book.

easily use parameters

Inventor 9 is Autodesk's challenge to more advanced modelling packages like ProE and Ideas. Cheng reveals that Inventor 9 offers many of the features seen in those more expensive alternatives. You can use this book and its CD to cheaply learn parametric modelling. This is just a fancy way of saying that you can parametrise various dimensions of parts in your object. In doing so, you can gain greater flexibility in easily varying these values, possibly to optimise the design of a composite object using those parts.

Inventor gives 4 types of parameters - model, user, linked and embedded. The book details the differences. But the gist of the text is to rise above the low level machinations. Instead, you can grasp and use parameters naturally in your design. Like relating cells in a spreadsheet. Except that unlike a spreadsheet, the inherent graphical ability here leads you to comprehend far more.

I purchased this book hoping to get two things: a refresher on the Inventor program, and a quick reference while using the software. I found that this book was decent in giving me a refresher, but it wasn't very handy as a quick reference.

Once I started using the software again, a lot of specific questions popped up. The Inventor Help is nearly useless, so I was really hoping for some clear step by step instructions. While these do exist in this book, the examples and pictures to support are not very clear.

Where the heck is the professional stuff...

Yes I fully support J. Heddinger writing in his review: "...now i need the advanced instructions...what about it cheng ?". It's the same story with each release: you can get an "Ïntroduction to..." or "Basics of..."! I think lot of typical users did not need an introduction to each release, what we need, in contrary, is a good "...release xx for professionals". Deep lay the flavours...

Simple, easy to follow Easter story

This is a great book to sit with your young child (3 +) and talk about the Palm Sunday/Easter events. Illustrations are simple, to the point. Nothing fancy. A nice feature is that at the end of each section there is a question that can prompt further discussion. Of course, the discussion will be geared to the age of the child, which is a good thing.

The DVD contains even more stories and is a nice addition to the book.

This is not a complicated theological text. Just mainly a simple way to use pictures and movies to "talk" about the Easter story. A great resource.

On Easter morning, we sat our 4 year old in front of the television and turned the video on to help "explain" Easter to her. She watched all the stories then asked to see them again. This wasn't just an Easter story, per se, but a collection of stories told separately, involving the events leading up to Easter and the ones immediately following. It gives a much better picture of what "Easter" was and how it impacted all of Jesus' followers by taking us on a brief walk through the early books of Acts and showing us the ramifications of Christs' ressurection. I was extremely impressed at how the story captured the overall message, simply in such a way that my daughter could understand, but also invited her to ask questions so we could talk about why Jesus did what he did.

I thought the book would be a carbon copy of the video content, but it was not. My daughter showed little interest in the book, at first, but after viewing the video, she wanted "more". I was pleasantly suprised to see that there was more content in the book that was not already covered in the video, which would have been redundant. Bravo.

It was especially pleasing to see that they depicted Christ on the cross at Calvary, but only in a silouhette and from a distance, which I felt was appropriate for this age. Most children of that age would be horrified to see the more graphic depiction of the event. I felt that was a good judgement on their part to allow the children to "see" the cross but not the gory details (yet). It creates a great point of reference for little ones to begin comprehending the physical cross.

The video itself is not so much like a cartoon with speaking characters, but is done as a narrative. Someone tells the story and we see the characters moving on the screen in conjunction with the voice. Again, I thought that was very appropriate for this genre of teaching. It was like listening to a story rather than watching TV. Again, well done.

Overall, I would most definitely recommend this for young children.

Eludes adult evaluation

The rating is as much a reflection of my own inadequacy at portraying the Easter story to a 4-year-old (the Christmas story would seem much easier) as it is a rating of this latest attempt. As an adult, I've learned not to expect things to go as planned when presenting a book like this to a child. Presumably, you read the story (either episodically or all at once) followed by the "reward" of the story as animated on the enclosed DVD (give high marks to the publisher for a very secure, transparent DVD pocket attached to the inside front cover).

So for what they're worth, from an adult's perspective I had a few reservations. The text immediately threw a "big" word ("Passover") at the young receiver/listener and with no definition whatsoever. And, of course, Jesus is merely "King," not King of the Jews (the latter would be a good start toward getting at the meaning of Passover). Meanwhile, the sorts of details that a Jacob Grimm or Lewis Carroll or C. S. Lewis would see as fascinating and memorable to a child are completely missing. What about Peter's 3 lies and the cock crowing? The infamous 30 pieces of silver? The carrying of a cross? A prickly crown? A drink of vinegar? The other crucified victims whom Jesus has the presence of mind to comfort? The two women (or either one of them) who alone (among the humans) do not desert Jesus in his greatest hour of need.

While leaving out some vivid details that the child might remember, the text provides the occasional gratuitous, and even dubious, editorial comment. The book has gone home with my grandchild so I'm drawing on memory, but the story is accompanied by occasional "color" commentary to the effect that when Jesus provoked jealousy by claiming to be King, he really "was" King. Or people doubted his claims, but he really did tell "the" truth.

I notice the frequent claims by reviewers on behalf of these books that they are "accurate" representations. Of what? Which gospel? Whose interpretation of it? As parents, some of us want children to be familiar with the stories of the Old and New Testaments and to make their own interpretations. It's doubtful they'll ever make any progress toward that end if they cannot distinguish between "fact" and "truth." The great truths of the world's great literary texts should never be confused with the frail "facts" that people of different religions, classes, ethnicities, and social backgrounds interpret so differently.

I frequently encounter 18-year-olds who cannot read Emily Dickinson's "Because I could not stop for death, it stopped for me" as anything but a happy chariot ride to the golden portals of heaven when everything in the poem points to the shining and alive natural and social world that the deceased must leave behind in favor of some murky place about which she cannot possibly know anything. (Any other meaning isn't even an "interpretation" because the reader has, in effect, changed the poem by inserting her own words and images in place of the poet's.) Then there are those same readers who become so completely caught up in Tim O'Brien's realistic representation of his experiences as a soldier in Viet Nam ("The Things They Carried") they completely miss or overlook (maybe willfully) the chapter, occurring midway through the novel, in which the narrator, suddenly assuming the role of the writer, says, "By the way, everything I've just told you--about my shooting and killing another human being, considered the enemy, and how it affected me--I made it up. Those were 'story truths,' not facts."

How unfortunate if children's earliest experiences do not prepare them for reading irony--the meaning of allegory, parable, metaphor, and the most important truths--all sacrificed for something some adults claim as "literal" or "factual" and therefore holding a higher priority.

Of course, I'm an adult myself, and therefore may be more prone to error than the child who understands such things without excessive mental anguishing about it. I found the pictures somewhat mundane as well as cartoonish (though the size of the noses, I would grant, is an accurate representation of the ethnostereotype). My granddaughter, on the other hand, was clearly more absorbed (for a little while, at least) in the DVD and its moving-talking pictures than in my reading of the story.
