From the Foreword by Dan G. Blazer, M.D., Ph.D.
Professor of Psychiatry, Duke University Medical Center "Occasionally, a writer on psychology and biblical faith comes along who can work 'from the center.' J. Christopher Garrison is such a writer. Let me explain what I mean by working from the center. No person who is thoroughly committed to his or her religious faith can really put that faith aside and work with scientific objectivity in blending the essence of that faith with the subject matter of empirical science. Even if someone could, I doubt that the project would be of great interest. Such a person would not be someone I would define as working from the center. A person who can work from the center in blending psychology and biblical faith is a person who can work not so much from the center of extremes as from the center of their being-from their spirit if you will. This ability shows itself when one has opened his or her innermost being to the Spirit of God and his or her mind and reason to modern psychology and truly grasped as a result the principles and concepts of what psychology is really about. This is what Garrison has achieved. In Garrison's Psychology of the Spirit, psychology is not so much integrated as it is enriched. Reading the end product deepens one's faith and one's understanding. Such a psychology is not the mere providing of formulas for meeting daily life crises. It is instead the total unfolding and renewal of one's inner being."

From the Author
At the very outset, we get a basic idea of what spirit psychology is by noting at least two important aspects in which it differs from modern, scientific psychology, the discipline taught in most colleges and universities. The two distinctions are really two different assumptions held by these disciplines with regard to human nature.
1. For scientific psychology, humans are biological beings with a mind. For spirit psychology, humans are spiritual beings with a body.
2. For scientific psychology, life is essentially perceived as the body’s biochemical energy manifesting itself in a highly complex and organized fashion. For spirit psychology, life is not to be mistaken for or equated with biochemical energy, nor is it a product of biochemistry. It is instead a vital force or power behind body energy that is exerted by an inner human spirit (Jn. 6:63).
To be more specific, spirit psychology holds that life is the force of an intelligent inner spirit whose presence in the body acts like a catalyst making body energy possible in all its organized and purposeful manifestations. These energy manifestations are then a medium through which the inner spirit asserts itself and empirically confirms its presence. So much is this the case that if the spirit could be removed, all body energy would cease, though, in itself, the body might remain sound in all its structures (Jas. 2:26; cf. Lk. 8:55; Acts 5:5).
From the Inside Flap
Born of a rational spirit, but captive and subject to a chemical flesh, every human being--or soul--experiences a split, twofold life: having freedom from the spirit and compulsion from the flesh. In this existence, meaningful relief from the body's domination of one's character is not possible without learning to transcend--through renewal of one's spirit--the power of the flesh on the soul. This basic relationship between body, soul and spirit forms the central, underlying concept in The Psychology of the Spirit.

BIBLICAL PSYCHOLOGY

A bit wordy. I haven't finished reading it but so far it holds to Biblical standards.

some editorial corrections
By RGK
If the editor read carefully, and checked the Scripture references he/she would have made corrections on page 50 and corrected typos changing Leviticus 7:11 to 17:11 and on page 112 changed Galatians 6:24 to 6:8 to match the quoted verse with its correct address.
How does one contact John Harris? He mentions he has another work (p. 137) where he writes about how Freud borrowed from Apostle Paul. Was it an academic dissertation, magazine article, or published book? Is it available anywhere?
In my third or fourth reading of it and haven't found or sensed any Christian theological conflicts. Don't understand why I haven't seen any reference to it nor any kind of mention about it in any Christian biblical counseling settings. Seems to me it would be awfully helpful in helping people understand who they and why they are the way they are and what needs to and can be done about it.
