WE ARE ROBIN VOL. 1: THE VIGILANTE BUSINESS, by Lee Bermejo

A modern spin on the original teen superhero!

In a Gotham City ravaged by the Joker, Batman alone is not enough to keep the peace—and just one Robin isn’t nearly enough to back him up. Now, teenagers who want to make a difference are coming together in droves and adopting the “R.” They’re not a gang. They’re not sidekicks.

They are Robin.

When Duke Thomas is recruited by the mysterious Nest to join teens from all different backgrounds and walks of life in the Robins, he hopes that they can help him find his missing parents. Instead, they find something much more nefarious—an underground conspiracy that threatens to bring down Gotham.

Now it’s up to these untrained teen vigilantes to save the city from a mysterious evil force. But being Robin is dangerous. Robins die. Will these new heroes face the same fate?

We Are Robin Volume 1 : The Vigilante Business

Here's what I expected.
A book geared at teens or kids, focused on diversity.
What I got?
A book geared towards young adults, which I consider 16-21 (since they are young and adults) which was in no way pandering, and a book full of colorful characters of color without making color a storyline or important talking point. I didn't feel like it was an affirmative action "Let's make an URBAN book for black teens and hispanics", I felt like these are just kids. Which, I think is great. I like characters who "just are" compared to characters who "try to be".
It's an origin story, in many aspects. Something that can be a huge turn off, but it was actually rather quick and easy to get into. It took three or four chapters to hit it's true stride, which wasn't a problem at all. It really came into it's own and felt GOOD when it was done. I really look forward to reading more about these Robins and their lives and their interactions with each other, and the criminal underbelly. I also got a TMNT Vibe from some of the characters, which was neat.

Overall I suggest this book to anyone. There's very little you need to know to get started, and what you do know doesn't spoil much. For example, Bruce Wayne is no longer Batman, a giant blue mech is. That's about it really.

Check it out!

Being a Robin is all about fashion ... and texting
By Alt
So a bunch of kids who like to text cute messages to each other using their cute text handles are all dressing like Robin, sort of. Apparently, anyone can be a Robin. You don’t need years of training or parents who were circus acrobats. You just need to know how to text. And you need to think up a cute name like Robina or DaxAtax. Oh, and it helps to have fashion sense. If you’re a girl, you want look “street” but you still want to look cute. A short little Robin cape will do the trick. If you’re a guy, I think it’s all about the shoes. Really, anyone with a cellphone and trendy sneakers can be a Robin. Although baggy pants are good too.

So the Robins want to do something about crime in Gotham, a city that is evenly divided between superheroes and supervillains, with maybe a couple dozen actual people whose job is to be victimized or saved. The stories in this volume are about texting and fashion and occasional crime fighting, which the Robins do reasonably well for kids with no training who have to sneak out of their bedrooms at night. Batman barely makes an appearance here (he publicly disapproves of the Robins, but he seems Batambiguous about the whole phenomenon). Batgirl swings in to give a pep talk, but why?

So the Robins have been recruited by The Nest, a mysterious dude whose identity ... well, the clues are not subtle, but maybe they are meant to misdirect. And then there’s this freaky guy with a scythe. Those two elements contribute more to the story than all of the Robins, who tend to be whiny and lame when they aren’t trying to come up with really cool texts. Except for Duke Thomas, who is the only Robin with potential. I liked him in Batman: Zero Year and I like him here, but his character gets dumbed down by being surrounded with the other Robins, who are mostly useless.

So the media portray the Robins as bad guys who make trouble for the cops, turning public opinion against them. Gee, that’s never been done before. Should Gotham crimefighters use guns? Gee, that's a question that's never been asked before. In fact, other than pulling together a bunch of texting teens who call themselves Robins, the six issues collected here are short on originality. This was just a bad idea that should have been brainstormed a lot longer before being produced ... or, more likely, it should have been stuck into the “bad idea” file and forgotten entirely. I'm giving this 3 stars slowly on the strength of Duke but it borders on 2.

As for the art, it would be great in Prez. It’s just wrong for a Bat-related title.

Worth it when the prive comes down
By Martha Gpe Pech Z
Entertaining, but not really a great story. There is some fresh air, cool characters and all, but don't think too much, the holes are too big. Normal kids as effective as robin? The Talon so easilly defeated?

Don't expect much.
