Ignore the "magic" science and enjoy the sweet, poignant ending

I'm a manga skeptic--I read *everything* when I was a kid, but nowadays, something has to jump up and grab my attention to get me to read it.
In the case of Chikyu Misaki, what jumped up and grabbed my attention was the art style (bold and definite, with solid, unique character designs and lots of emotion and expression that doesn't use many of the shorthand emoticon-esque tricks found in many manga) and the creature design for Neo. I am a sucker for a fuzzy big-eyed plesiosaur.
The plot here is an old standby of kids' movies--kid moves somewhere new, lives in a big old house, and discovers a legendary creature that she has to protect from the world. It's the way Iwahara Yuuji tells his version of the story that makes it well worth reading. While it comes across as active, light-hearted, and sweet, it doesn't veer away from some difficult territory--there's violent death, kidnapping, and a lot of fear and pain for a bunch of young kids to work through.
In this volume, the Mysteries Come Clear (c). Though the science at work in this manga seriously strains credibility, it feels in keeping with the world and the tone and themes of the first two volumes, and I forgive it its impossibility for the sweet, sad point it makes about how quick humans are to deny each other humanity. If you've read Kazuo Ishiguro's "Never Let Me Go," there's a tiny hint of that story's fragile, still tragedy here--but overcome by the youth, will, and optimism of the cast of young characters. I put this up there with "Lilo & Stitch" as a story about being unusual but finding (and making) a home.
