Maybe you have to be a fan. I don't know.
By Brian Connors
Okay, I'll get one thing out of the way right now: the only thing big about this book is the type size. The type in the standard addition is as big as some large-print books, and the content is limited and kind of quick to breeze through. The recipes look good, but they aren't really the point here.
I picked this book up expecting something along the lines of a couple of Southern-style Guy Fieris, or maybe an older set of Deen brothers. The book is, to quote The Nostalgia Critic in his review of Cloverfield, "adequate". But there isn't a whole lot of substance to it. What there is in here is pretty good; it isn't really humor so much as witty remniscences, and you probably won't be rolling on the floor laughing at any point in the book, but if it hits something familiar, you'll probably smile and enjoy the subject at hand. The authors are Christian radio personalities, but they don't really get too deeply into religion except as a cultural matter (they have a decent discussion of church potlucks, which is a pretty common experience to most people). The food they champion is fairly stereotypically Middle American with junkfood tendencies, in other words basically the way most white people in this country eat (though one of the authors does make an impassioned plea in favor of sushi). As much as middle American food is looked down upon, often justifiably, it's hard to argue with the fact that a) a lot of it does taste very, very good, and b) these guys are as passionate about it as any other foodie is about their favorite cuisine.
I guess I would have a hard time recommending it, and I can't seem to push it much higher than three stars, so I'll call it a read-before-ordering book. But it's not at all a bad book, and I can't claim to speak for everyone, so... don't take my word for it, I guess. Considering it could have been an ignorant tirade against anything that doesn't have 100 grams of fat per shovel-sized serving, it's pretty good. I just can't get too excited about it. (Although I don't care what they say -- "stuffing" and "dressing" are interchangeable, and I will laugh my ass off at anyone who insists on one term or the other.)

If you could read "Marshmallow Fluff," this would be it...
By Coltbear NJ
I can't imagine anyone ordering this expecting it to be a serious cookbook... well, at least I didn't. I got exactly what I expected, a fast, easy read that felt like I was hangin' out and talking (uh, whining? complaining?), to a few "buds" on our thoughts on dieting, our favorite meats and places to eat (including some regional chains I've never heard of), foods that should never be changed to be even remotely dietetic, such as potato chips and ice cream, how to eat certain foods the proper way (especially ribs and pizza, which went on WAY too long), what we'd stock in our own supermarket, and last but not least, some "best of the best" recipes the guys have heard of that they felt compelled to share.
You know what you're in for a little into the book with the guys' two "most underrated foods" - peanut butter and hush puppies, which they devote an entire six pages on why. The recipes aren't much better, but that's not what the book is about. They seem thrown in as an after-thought. The book is about "Rick and Bubba," and whether or not you buy into their uh, "philosophy" and lifestyle.
I found them to be good-natured, harmless and more than occasionally, somewhat funny. But you've heard all of this before. I didn't know that the two were radio personalities (the book definitely has that type of feel), but after this, I've had enough and don't think I'll be tuning into their radio show anytime soon.
In keeping with the theme of this book, it reminds me of a jar of "Marshmallow Fluff"... sweet, but with a LOT of empty calories, and something you certainly wouldn't want to have often. But who doesn't enjoy an occasional "Fluffernutter" every now and then? :-)

Not recommended unless you are already a fan
By Timothy B. Riley
Even though I am a city-boy I have come to appreciate some of the down home, self-described "red neck" humorists such as Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Egnvall and yes, even Larry the Cable Guy. Their wit and self effacing comedic styles appeals to a wide range of audiences. I was hoping that Rick and Bubba would be the culinary equivalent to the afore mentioned comics. Not so much, at least not for me.
I had never heard of these two fellows and with a name like "Big Honkin' Book of Grub", I expected it to be full of interesting and funny stories of how food affects their lives and at least 30 or more recipes. This book does contain some of that but it is so focused on the Rick's and Bubba's personalties, their radio show and their personal appearances that I could never really get into it. The writing style is disjointed (many sentences begin with "I (Rick)..." or "I (Bubba)..." instead of the more common "we..." that we are used to seeing in co-authored books) and purposefully kitschy, with a lot of "da's" and dem's" thrown in.
I decided to see if I could listen to their show so I looked up Rick and Bubba's website. I was surprised to see how many radio stations carry them; quite a few country stations (including one where I live) and, surprisingly, several religious or "Christian" stations host the show. That could explain all of the references in the book to church and God/Jesus. They were more charming on the air than I found them to be in this book. My recommendation would be that unless you know who they are and are a fan there are better books out there in this genre.
