About the Author
Dan Abnett lives and works in Maidstone, Kent. After graduating from Oxford, he worked for a while as an editor of comics and children's books before turning to writing full time. Eternity War Volume 2 was a beast! DC Comics really upped the ante on the MOTU mythology. This volume went back and addressed the past. Back stories and cliffhangers were answered, and certain charcters' fates were revealed. The only criticism I had came from previous issues on how they downplayed Skeletor's threat and pretty much dismissed him as a formidable foe. As someone who grew up in the 80s, I knew that Skeletor's was a force to be reckoned with. Eternity Volume 2 really establishes Skeletor's charcter and I am really in awe of him. The rest of the characters had some great storylines and they were very well told and excuted wonderfully. If you thought that they could not expand on the MOTU mythology anymore, then you are in for a nice surprise! This was another awesome tale about our favorite heroes and villans

I was expecting some nostalgic fun but this series kinda blew me away with a great story and stunning art. Definitely the best interpretation of he-man/she-ra ever. And, despite being more violent than Saturday morning cartoons, so hopeful!

Grade 7 Up–Robin is easy to like because he is fallible and immature. This volume includes a good portion of the late '60s/early '70s comics featuring The Boy Wonder. As a college student, he has to face the dominant issues of the day, namely civil unrest and campus radicalism. Comic art from this period is entirely black and white, with heavy lines and lots of background and shading. It can be a daunting visual and takes some time to get used to. While some cultural issues may fly over readers' heads, for the most part the book has plenty of action, strong characters, and the ever-present sarcastic asides that make comics such fun to read.–John Leighton, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

Great to see the old stories again, but time hasn't always been kind.

This is the second in the Batman Brave & The Bold Team Ups, and I have to say it's better than the first volume in a lot of ways. For one thing, you have Neal Adams and Jim Aparo supplying art throughout. That gives you two of the best Batman artists of the 60's and 70's in the same book. There's always a different self-contained story in each issue, so you don't have time to get bored with anything. Those are the positives.

The negatives are the amazing amount of repeat guests you have in these twenty-something issues. Two stories featuring Sgt. Rock (of all people), the Teen Titans (complete with the "hip" 60's slang), Black Canary, and Green Arrow. Some stars only rated one issue, like Wonder Woman (during her powerless phase), Plastic Man, Metal Men, and The Bat Squad (don't ask...it's easily the worst story in the book). Heroes like Deadman and The Flash are sorely underused in this run. Both of them get one story each to shine, and they should have been more in there.

Hopefully the next volume will pick up with a few different guest stars rather than recycling the old ones over and over again. Hawkman, The Atom, and even The Elongated Man would make better guests than Sgt. Rock or the Bat Squad. Still, this is better than not having the stories at all. It's a nice glimpse into the past that was leading up to the best years of the Brave & The Bold stories ahead.

Classic Batman before he got too dark and still went out in the day. Great 70s era tales. This is the volume to start with as the previous volume one is 90% campy. Vol 3 is also superb.

Mediocre unfortunately

While I generally love these big black and white collections this one featuring Robin isn't the best. Much of these stories are really dated and boring '70s "teen movement" themed with Robin cast as the middle man between the "uptight adults" and the "revolutionary college kids" he hangs out with. Sure, that sounds like it could be kitschy fun but most of these stories are dull and full of groan-worthy cliches clearly written by a middle-aged guy trying to make sense of the '70s college lifestyle. It's not terrible but certainly nothing you'd want to read more than once, there are better Showcases out there.

About the Author
Vicki Lawrence is an Emmy Award-winning actress, frequent game show panelist of the 1970s and 1980s, and also an American comedienne and singer. She's best known for her co-starring role on The Carol Burnett Show, alongside Carol Burnett, from 1967 to 1978, and as sharp-tongued matriarch Thelma Harper (the main character on Mama's Family, beginning from 1983 to 1990, which had spun-off from The Carol Burnett Show's The Family sketches).

Monty Aidem is a TV comedy writer and entertainer who first wrote on a revival of the series Laugh-In which featured a young comedian named Robin Williams. He went on to become a writer on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and has written for many other stars like Bob Hope, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra. He is currently Vicki Lawrence's writer for her popular live show, and entertains audiences of his own, performing a tribute to Frank Sinatra seen across America.

Same Old Mama!

"Mama for President: Good Lord Why Not?" is written by Vicki Lawrence in the character of Mama Thelma Harper. Like the Mama people have come to love from the show "Mama's Family," she is still as grumpy as ever in this hilarious book.

Her wisecracking remarks hit on topics people think about with regards to politics but never seem to get answers to. Each chapter is broken up into subjects pertaining to her campaign (though Mama sometimes runs off topic for brief moments). This book is wildly hilarious and I would definitely recommend it to any fan of Mama Thelma Harper/ Vicki Lawrence.

Mama's Remedy for Drama!

How much fun is this book? I found myself reading it on the NY subway laughing out loud. To ride the subway in the summer heat and have a large grin on my face makes this book worth every penny. You can actually hear "Mama's" voice when you read it (which made me look for the audiobook version, would be even funnier).

If you want some good laughs, an easy "beach" read, this is the book for you. It's witty, non offensive and just plain fun. Pick it up. (but don't read it in the bookstore or Mama will chastise you several times in the book for doing so).

Who'da thunk it? Vicki Lawrence was all set to become a dental hygenist.
Thank God she didn't - and that Carol Burnett had the good sense to hire her on her variety show - or we'd never have Thelma "Mama" Harper, one of the funniest and brazen characters in all of television history. I vividly remember the fall of 1982, at age 6, when "Mama's Family" came on TV. The promo spots for the show freaked me out - exactly WHO was this mean old lady who was going to be on TV every week? Anyhow, I didn't watch "Mama's Family" until long after it was cancelled and in reruns - and I saw it before ever knowing that the character originated on the "Carol Burnett Show". It's amazing that Vicki started playing Mama at age 25, with no makeup and only a wig and glasses. And 35 years later, Vicki is still playing Mama.

Anyhow - needless to say, the book is a nice satire, very timely (and timeless!) and relevant. And the tone is just right...like Mama was in the same room. I enjoyed every bit of it and look forward to re-reading it over the years. In fact, the book is 'by' Thelma Harper (as told to Vicki Lawrence and Monty Aidem)...and I tried to imagine Mama's voice while reading it, which helped. There are also many nice little side bars that pop up on every third or fourth page (like people who Mama thinks should be tasered, and her answers to questions like 'Mama, what would you do about gun control? Answer: That depends...are we talking about squirt guns here??') Also included are some of Mama's recipes that she'll be serving in the White House if she's elected...if I cooked, I would definitely be making some of them.

I did kinda wish that Mama had made some references to her family and friends - like Eunice, Ellen, Vint, Naomi, Iola, Bubba....it woulda made the book that much funnier I imagine.

This book is a collection of eleven chapters which together represent an original contribution to the field of (multimodal) spoken dialogue systems. The chapters include highly relevant topics, such as dialogue modeling in research systems versus industrial systems, evaluation, miscommunication and error handling, grounding, statistical and corpus-based approaches to discourse and dialogue modeling, data analysis, and corpus annotation and annotation tools. The book contains several detailed application studies, including, e.g., speech-controlled MP3 players in a car environment, negotiation training with a virtual human in a military context, application of spoken dialogue to question-answering systems, and cognitive aspects in tutoring systems. The chapters vary considerably with respect to the level of expertise required in advance to benefit from them. However, most chapters start with a state-of-the-art description from which all readers from the spoken dialogue community may benefit. I purchased the book as a present for my son who is an Executive Chef. His restaurant features a take on Southern cooking, his chicken and dumplings are outstanding. This book certainly hit the mark I am very glad that I purchased it.

I confess that after reading the book, which I did give to my son, I decided to purchase a copy for myself. I truly enjoyed the book, EZ read, and the recipes are over the top. Thank you Louie's Backyard for sharing.

Key West and Louie's Backyard is now added to my bucket list.

Motivating Recipes

A fun cookbook to read and heaven forbid, actually use to cook a memorable meal. Southern cooking can be very fattening, heavy, unhealthy. But Louie adds pizzazz to creative cooking in the deep south. I am particularly fond of cookbooks from famous bakeries or restaurants because the recipes have been fine-tuned to please many people or they would not be in business.

Just can't agree ... this is a waste of time

The Secrets Beneath is just not a very good read ... for tweens/teens (the supposed market) or for adults. The basic premise of the story is that a 13yo who loves reading Nancy Drew books (altho that particular character trait is only mentioned a few times in the beginning of the book) and is overly curious gets into serious trouble with her inquisitiveness. Bekah Yoder, a modern-day Amish girl, lives in the fictional town of Middlefield, OH. The Ohio Amish have slightly different ways than Pennsylvania Amish (differences are described by the author) but this doesn't really come into the plot. Bekah is from a small family who live in a town that mixes "yankees" with "Amish". The story gets dark and mysterious when Bekah notices strange "goings-on" next door and decides to find out what is happening. Her curiousity almsot literally gets her killed ... a situation that is a bit too forboding and scary in this day and age.

I didn't like this book: the Amish connection seemed like just a marketing ploy (seems "Amish" is really in this year) and was an unnecessary part of the plot; the characters didn't ring true ... especially the budding romance with the proverbial "boy next door"; the sub-plot of the cousin coming to stay seemed like trying to make the Amish just like Americans with broken marriages/runaway moms/family troubles -- again, a bit too trite. Finally, I'm not sure exactly who the author is writing to: the book implies it's for tweens/teens but the writing tone seems more adult.

I'm thinking the author, Kathleen Fuller, should stick with writing books for adults and avoid the tween/teen market. I can't believe this is the second book in a planned series! Who is buying it? I can't recommend this one (other than it's a clean, Christian book for tweens/teens/adults so it's better than some books for these age groups).

A nicely written book, doesn't talk down to its YA audience

There are many things I like about this book and a few things I wish were a little different or that were added to it, but overall it's a very nicely written book. I found the writing to be very intelligent and to have a good pace. The writer does a very good job of keeping the story moving and of keeping the descriptions short, but providing enough information so that you certainly get a feel for the settings.

I was a bit put off at first by the fact that the perspective/protagonist seems to shift quite often. It's a bit confusing at first and I'm not sure a younger reader would pick up on this as being a writer's tool. It's really fine once you understand what she's doing, I don't mean it to be a huge criticism, but I'm a writer and I was kind of surprised that she used such an uncommon device. I think the narrative would be just as strong (probably stronger) from one perspective.

Also, the author provides an Amish glossary up front and then uses those words throughout the book, yet she italicizes them (an editorial choice probably, not necessarily that of the author) and I find it kind of redundant: YA readers are smart enough to know that if they don't recognize a particular word, it's probably in that pre-story glossary. I think it makes the stories go bump a bit when you keep seeing words in italics.

I wouldn't mind if more things about the depth of the Amish religion/philosophy/history were woven into the narrative--or perhaps a preamble that explains things in more detail. On the other hand, the author is not hammering the Amish religion too heavily and that's a good thing. It is what it is, a spiritual setting, and that's all it needs to be for these books.

I won't rehash the plot here but this is a mystery ala Nancy Drew and while it's not nail-biting drama by any means, the stories are pretty interesting and I think kids (boys and girls) will like them.

Most importantly though, as I said at the top, the books are well written in terms of dialog, descriptions and pace. It's a very intelligently written book, I think, and the author obviously acknowledges the readers' intelligence. Yes, there are a few boy/girl relationship cliches (and how I loathe cliches), but they're not that distracting: boy teases girl, girl falls in the pond, boy laughs at her. Fine, I guess, but they seem staged a bit. So many YA books are utter garbage because of their condescending tone, this one is not. I would say that a book like Holesis quite a bit more dramatic (and a great read) but I think that is aimed at a different type of audience (male and older).

I think girls looking for a series to keep them busy reading in bed on winter nights would love this series.

Nice mystery for young readers

Thirteen year old Bekah Yoder loves to read, especially Nancy Drew mysteries. She is a naturally curious person (some would say nosy) and can't help wondering about some things that are happening. Like why has her cousin Amanda come to live with Bekah's family instead of her own family? What is her new next-door neighbor burying in his yard? Who is the scary looking man who has also been hanging around next door? Why is Caleb Mullet teasing her all the time? Bekah can't help poking her nose into places it doesn't belong but she better be careful or her curiosity will leave her into danger.

"The Secrets Beneath" is a nice mystery aimed at readers aged 8 to 12. While Bekah likes to read Nancy Drew mysteries, this book and the one before it (A summer Secret) reminded me more of the Trixie Belden series. Bekah is closer to Trixie's age and like Trixie she is curious - a curiosity that often gets her into trouble with her parents (and sometimes real danger). She is not deliberately naughty, just naturally curious. She is a typical 13-year-old navigating the minefield of friendship and boys. Amanda is a good character - upset over problems at home (author Kathleen Fuller takes her time revealing what those problems are so the reader also has a mystery to solve) and acting out a bit in the hope of getting sent home. Since it is set in the Amish community, religion plays a major part in the book, but the book is never preachy or trying to convert anyone ((in fact, Amanda has some issues with prayer). The mystery is nicely done with some thrilling and scary moments (maybe a bit too scary for readers younger than eight). The Bekah/Caleb moments are cute and will probably make young girls sigh (and again reminded me again of the Trixie Belden books, especially the Trixie Belden/Jim Frayne relationship).

"The Secrets Beneath" is a nice mystery for young readers.
