Terrible narration! The reader loses her place, repeats sections, misses and backs up, apparently talking to someone in the room...numerous mistakes on all 11 CD's and the replacement was just another bad copy. Publisher was contacted about the first copy, said they would replace it, but now claims it's Amazon's problem.

It's Not a Complete Story, but it's Fun

I think the reason I didn't enjoy this as much as I wanted to was because I didn't know what to expect. I feel like I didn't know what the stakes were, or how this tied into the rest of the DC Universe. I felt like the writing was kind of scatter-brained. But I'm realizing now that this is part one of a novel. This is one full story, and just the first half is in here. That said, I like a lot of the ideas presented in here, all of the Martian's alter-egos and his attempt to assure Earths' safety. I just hope that the second volume brings all of those to a satisfying conclusion.

Seeing Martian Manhunter in other DC/Warner Bros. things was good but seeing this I got a different side to all his personalities. I never knew he had so many. Well written and easy to follow along. :)

The Martian(s) Has Landed

J’onn J’onzz, AKA Martian Manhunter, is a staple of the DC pantheon since 1955. Being one of the original founding members of the Justice League (before the New 52 cut out J’onn and replaced him with Cyborg – which in my humble opinion will never replace the Martian), becoming a lovable straight man humor on Justice League International in the 80’s, to possibly being one of the strongest and deadliest beings on the planet from the 90’s/2000 and even the New 52. That is what makes the character appealing in being powerful and lovable at the same time. With the DCYou, J’onn has finally received his own series after a few years, even if it’s only for 12 issues. And what version of the Martian are we getting? Mostly the powerful/feared version, but shades of his nicer self, but a new twist that is parts mystery and sci-fi/horror.

MARTIAN MANHUNTER VOL.1: THE EPIPHANY collects issues #1-6 and CONVERGENCE: ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #2. Martian Manhunter is asked to go to the moon and check up on three missing astronauts. To his surprise, he discovers a white martian and that “The Epiphany” is activated. J’onn is that epiphany; a weapon created by the martians to destroy the Earth as their new home. J’onn is shocked by this revelation. He is not the last of his kind, he’s not the superhero he thought he was, and what can he do now? Suddenly, J’onn has disappeared and four different people around the world are seeing visions of J’onn, confused of what is happening. What’s become of J’onn? Who are these four individuals who are connected to J’onn and his powers? All they know is that a global invasion of Martians is at hand, and J’onn is nowhere in sight.

While most MM stories in the past have traditionally been about the characters’ alienation (pun not intended) from being the last of his kind and Earth from various writers like John Ostrander, AJ Lieberman, and Geoff Johns, new British writer Rob Williams does carry over some of those same aspects and makes this new series a mystery of the whereabouts of J’onn and who these new characters are, while adding in some darker science fiction and some horror. The first half of the book is dedicated to J’onn and his life as superhero, as well as explaining why his powerset is beyond most characters in the DC Universe (the concept of him being a weapon is a fresh twist). There is also the subtle references to past versions of the character, and an obvious reference to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

The other half of the book is the four characters Pearl, FBI Agent Wessel, Mould, and Mr. Biscuits trying to figure out what is going on while being chased by white martians. Not much time is explored on these characters (purposely), though with little time on page easily the best character here is Mr. Biscuits, 8-foot tall skinny gentlemen with a cane that is pretty fun to watch. Thankfully Williams does keep the book moving at a fast pace as the four individuals are scrambling to survive against shape-shifting martians and converging together to find out the truth of everything going on.

Eddy Barrows artwork is stunning in it’s high detail, but it’s the alien designs that make this . Diogenes Neves does issue #5. Barrows highest contribution goes toward the alien designs, being a mix of the old Pre-52 stuff and the likes of John Carpenter’s The Thing. The aliens are scary and grotesque for good reason, while the lighter moments offset the darkness.

The drawbacks here is the confusing story shifts that Williams does where one moment there is J’onn, then it cuts away to the other side of the world, then it cuts to the Martians, and back to J’onn. The pace is hectic and doesn’t have a grasp of time to confuse some readers. Another fault might be for fans of MM long history in question. Not to spoil things, but I can see purist hate this new chapter of the character (or lack of). Because this is part of the DCYou being 12 issues before the company wide REBIRTH, this new continuity shift might not last, so those who get mad about this plot twist might want to wait and see. And the last thing is the anti-climatic ending, which it looks like is left unresolved until volume 2.

Still, I am a fan of J’onn and this new take on the character, MARTIAN MANHUNTER VOLUME 1: THE EPIPHANY is a pretty cool mystery/sci-fi take. It may confuse some and unsettle old time fans, but I do want to see where this goes as this is only one more volume before J’onn’s solo series get cut off due to the DC REBIRTH event.

This book offers a succinct and self-contained treatment of general relativity and its application to neutron stars, black holes, gravitational waves and cosmology, at an intermediate level. The required mathematical concepts are introduced informally, following geometrical intuition as much as possible. The approach is theoretical, but there is ample discussion of observational aspects and instrumental issues where appropriate.

Nite-wing or Nightwing?

Nightwing, with much hard work, has finally made Bludhaven his own; Nightwing is now to Bludhaven what Batman is to Gotham. Dick Grayson is the protector of the few innocents that still grace the streets of Bludhaven, an urban cesspool that makes Gotham look like a good site for a Girl Scout meeting.

Superman makes an appearance early in the book, teaming up with Nightwing to pay Roland Desmond a visit. The relationship between Nightwing and Superman is very different from that of Batman and Superman. As one reviewer has already aptly pointed out, both Batman and Robin teamed up with Superman quite often. Robin, Dick Grayson, developed a stronger trust of Superman and invites his help. Batman views Superman as a hindrance.

One of my favorite characters is the blond-headed "Nitewing" who busts up criminals in true vigilante fashion. He is utterly obsessed and I eagerly await new books that reveal the reason he battles crime so fiercely. How will Chief Redhorn utilize the aid of this Nite-wing? And what will happen when the two Nightwings finally confront one another?

Another good series of plot twists, and a crime boss who refuses to fade away, the Nightwing series shows great promise. I've liked both books I've ordered so far.

Continues to please

I'm obsessed with Nightwing. Keep that in mind as you read this.
The adventures of the man who was Robin and is now Nightwing continue to provide solid entertainment. The ongoing storyline of Blockbuster takes an interesting turn here, one that almost has you feeling sorry for the man (well, maybe for his mother). Dick's decision to join the police force gets it's follow through, although not a lot of page time as of yet. The usual players their appearances: Babs (interesting stuff there), Huntress(ditto), Clancy, Tad (who seems to have learned little in the way of caution from his shooting), and, of course, the Bat.
Batman's appearance leads to what is certainly the best storyline in the compilattion: the retaking of Blackgate. It includes the seemingly required trip down memory lane, although this time with thankfully little of the self-doubt that plagues earlier storylines.
Meanwhile, in Bludhaven, things are brewing nicely towards some larger plot.
If anything cost this issue a star, it was the Double Dare segment. Don't get me wrong: I liked the ladies just fine. But sandwiched between a visit from Superman and the retaking of Blackgate, their hijinks seemed a little fluffy to me.
Definitely a must-own for Nightwing fans!

For some reason, my last review didn't show up, so apologies for the shorter on.
Definitely a must-read for any Nightwing fans.
Nightwing continues to come into his own as a hero, even as he's pulled by his ties to Batman. The strongest segment of this compilation is definitely the retaking of Blackgate, which includes the seemingly obligatory "Dick Grayson, this is your life" flashback series (this one, however, is thankfully light on the self-doubt that plagues our hero). Seeing Oracle in acition is worth the price of admission all on its own. The only caveat I'd add is that if you're not familiar with the events in Gotham (the quake, No Man's Land) and the players involved, it might get a bit confusing.
Less strong are the Double Dare and police academy storylines. DOuble Dare, while interesting enough, seemed a bit too cotton-candy in the midst of the other storylines, and while the idea of Dick going to the academy is interesting, it doesn't get nearly enough page time to be more than almost an afterthought.
The continuing intrigue of of the Bludhaven PD is shaping up nicely, and Blockbuster's new storyline almost makes you feel sorry for the big guy.
Overall, definitely worth acquiring.

"As chip size and complexity continue to grow exponentially, the challenges of functional verification are becoming a critical issue in the electronics industry. It is now commonly heard that logical errors missed during functional verification are the most common cause of chip re-spins, and that the costs associated with functional verification are now outweighing the costs of chip design. To cope with these challenges engineers are increasingly relying on new design and verification methodologies and languages. Transaction-based design and verification, constrained random stimulus generation, functional coverage analysis, and assertion-based verification are all techniques that advanced design and verification teams routinely use today. Engineers are also increasingly turning to design and verification models based on C/C++ and SystemC in order to build more abstract, higher performance hardware and software models and to escape the limitations of RTL HDLs. This new book, Advanced Verification Techniques, provides specific guidance for these advanced verification techniques. The book includes realistic examples and shows how SystemC and SCV can be applied to a variety of advanced design and verification tasks."

A poorly written but comprehensive book

This book is very poorly written. I don't know how it got past editors, but it is full of grammatical errors (about 5-10 per page), and unfortunately the errors get in the way of reading the material. Explanations are also poor, and knowledge is assumed without prior explanation. They even describe files that are not in the book itself, but are only visible from a web site! Some sentences make no sense at all. The text sometimes refers to the wrong figures. However, they do try and be comprehensive, and cover a huge amount of practical material. It is short on theory or any justification for many of the assertions they make. Some almost throw-away comments indicate they know their stuff well, but this book is very much for advanced practitioners only. I can't help feeling that some of it was directly transcribed from notes they made to themselves when they were bored in meetings. They tried to use previous projects as real-world examples, but the examples are so complex that you can't follow them unless you have expertise in various areas already (e.g. OC-48, OC-192, ATM, etc).

Don't waste your money

Anyone with any experience running simulation will not find anything in this book besides frustration. System C examples are woefully incomplete, without even one useful example. The authors attempt to describe semi advanced techniques without even laying out the basics of instantiating a complete test bench structure properly. About the only thing useful are flow charts of a proper testbench.

Practical book with some good examples we could use in our training. It will be more helpful if the examples are converted to latest versions of SystemC.
