Grant Morrison's Pre-52 Batman Returns in the New 52 Gloriously
By Anarchy in the US
Before the DC New 52 came about, Grant Morrison was writing his near 5 year run on Batman with the last arc at the time being Batman Incorporated, which was supposed to show the climax of Morrison's entire run. Because of the New 52, Morrison didn't get to finish his epic on the Dark Knight as intended. Many people wondered if DC was going to let Morrison finish his epic storyline, since his elongated Batman arc was set in the pre-52 universe, meaning Morrison's story arc would conflict with Scott Snyder's own story arc Batman Vol. 1: The Court of Owls (The New 52), so it looked hopeless for fans wanting to end 5 years worth of story with no ending. After 9 months of New 52 comics, in some shape or another, DC decided to finally let Grant Morrison finish his long waited story arc with 14 new issues(13 and issue #0. Volume 1 of Batman Inc. the first half of Morrison's grand finale and I can honestly say this for those who waited: this will not disappoint.

[Spoiler: I do give away who is the leader of Leviathan is. Those who have read all of Grant Morrison's Batman-run probably won't be surprised who it is, but I'm still giving you heads-up anyway.]

BATMAN INCORPORATED VOL.1: DEMON STAR collects issues #0-6 and picks up right where BATMAN INCORPORATED left off. The head of Leviathan has revealed itself as none other then Talia Al Ghul and has put a massive bounty on Damien's head to get revenge on Batman. The final phase of Talia's plan is put into play as Leviathan members slowly take over Gotham's info structure, a denizen of Man-Bat warriors take position, and hundreds of the worlds best assassin's flood into Gotham to claim Damien's head. All of Talia's actions will lead into Batman's two choices: save Gotham or his own son. What actions will Batman choice? You'll have to read and find out.

For the sake of clarification, first things first: This book is technically Batman Incorporated volume 2. Since the first volume came out before the New 52 here Batman Incorporated, DC decided to put Morrison's Batman Inc. as part of the New 52 and rebranded it as volume 1. DON"T BE FOOLED! Yes this book is designed like the other N52 books, yes it has volume 1 on the cover, yes Batman and cast have their new 52 costumes...but that is it! There is nothing else that carries over into other N52 Batman titles at all (except one plot line that has major repercussions throughout the Bat-family, but that is for the next volume of Bat Inc. so don't worry about that). Everything else that carries over from Morrison's Pre-52 storyline is here and readers who have avid knowledge in his 5-year run should consider this book as Batman Incorporated volume 2, not volume 1 as listed. And any new readers don't be confused either. Batman Inc. is the second to last book in Grant Morrison's long run on Batman. If you want the complete rich history Morrison has cooked up, then here is the reading order:

Batman and Son
The Black Glove
Batman R.I.P.
Final Crisis
Batman: Time and the Batman
The Return of Bruce Wayne
Batman & Robin (three volumes worth)
Batman, Incorporated Vol.1
Batman Incorporated Vol.1: Demon Star (that's the current book being reviewed)
Batman Incorporated Vol.2: Gotham's most Wanted (will be available in December 2013)

To begin with, Morrison's absence from Batman may have been a good thing, since it feels like Morrison is recharged in writing Batman again. Vol.1 of Batman Inc. focused mostly on the sub characters, tons of ideas thrown into each issue and making Leviathan a growing globabl threat. Now Vol.1: Demon Star feels like Morrison's big finale is tightly woven and coherent (yes I wrote that. A Grant Morrison book that is coherent, I know, who would of thought!?), ambitious as it has ever been, colorfully funny and dark mixed together, and all plotlines start coming to a head.

The first thing is Morrison puts his sub characters in the background and makes the great decision to focus squarely on the Batman/Damien/Talia family angle. This makes the book have complete focus of itself and relationship these characters have for one another come off strong and coherent. Morrison also makes the cat-and-mouse effect of Batman and Robin trying to defeat Leviathan a fun romp in Demon Star that sees the assassins attack, the return of Matches Malone, Redbird and Wingman, Talia and Ra's deep family ties, and even the return to issue #666 of a Damien as a future Batman. Demon Star is a grand and concise journey that is showing Morrison's 5-year run on Batman is still going strong, yet still have some light humor about it since his work on Batman & Robin with shades of bleakness.

If there is one big positive Morrison achieves is his near end run on Batman by finally tying up all loose ends and making it very straightforward read, which something of a common complaint about Morrison people feel he lacks in. Morrison is known to over indulge in mysticism, pseudo-science and reality in some of his books before, as well as having some bad pacing issues where things just happen and you feel as if you're missing information. Not here. I can honestly say the pacing and narrative is spot on and easy to follow compared to other Morrison books, like say the recently released Superman: Action Comics, Vol. 2: Bulletproof (The New 52) for example. I didn't once have to flip back on pages to see if I missed something or double check what I was reading. I know exactly what was going on and everything actually fell into place naturally. Since Morrison has been building 5 years of Batman and is coming to a close, all the lingering pieces of information is finally coming together and the man is not setting up any future plot lines, and because of it, the narrative is easy to follow. The Third Batman that was prophesied back Batman and Son? That gets explained. Who is the mysterious Wingman from Batman Inc. Vol 1 issue #6? You'll finally see who it is. And the reason for the issue #666 of Damien as Batman? Oh yes, it finally makes sense. The fruits of Morrisons grand run is finally being explained and at an reasonably straightforward narrative to do it. Bravo Morrison. Just goes to show the man can write a story that is easy to follow then say Final Crisis.

In fact...and this bold of me to admit, but I can argue volume 1 Demon Star is semi-decent start for new readers. The #0 issue quaintly sums up all of Batman Incorporated's history in a issue at breakneck speeds that new readers can jump on. Even issue #2 entails Talia and Ra's Al Ghul's family ties together give great insight on Talia's motives to the whole situation that new readers get a good understanding of Batman and Talia's motives for what they are doing. This makes Demon Star a reasonably good (but rough) start for new readers on Grant Morrisons run on Batman.

Art duties fall mostly on Chris Burnham, who has drawn some of Morrisons Batman, but now is full time artist and I have to say he art might be a definitive part of Morrison's inner mind. Not too many artists can grasp Morrison's storytelling, but Burnham exceeds expertly. His art is highly detailed and cartoon-like, very similar to All Star Superman artists Frank Quitely in many ways. Burnham has become an artist I want to see more in the future. Thankfully, Burnham does majority of the books art to keep consistency in Morrison's storytelling. Frazer Irving does issue # 0 and Andres Guinaldo does a few pages in the end, which is noticeable, but doesn't take away from Burnham's narrative.

When it comes to negatives, most Grant Morrison books are not for everyone because of his writing style, zany ideas that go beyond most people's comprehensions, and the fact his books leave many loose plots hanging until the very end. Thankfully, most of those setbacks are gone with Demon Star for the most part. His ideas are clear and focused and his loose plots are coming full circle. None the less, Morrison's writing style is still not for everyone and much like Geoff Johns 9-year run on Green Lantern, new readers are highly suggested to start all the way at the beginning of the writers run. You'll get the best experience if you start at the beginning.

So BATMAN INCORPORATED VOL.1: DEMON STAR really surprised me at how well Morrison is making his finale on Batman. It's ambitious, humorous, action packed, plotlines are finally being explained, and Morrison's writing narrative is one of the more focused and streamlined stories he rarely does. New readers could give this a shot, but you're going to miss out on 5-years of build up. I'll give Demon Star a 4 ½ score out of 5 stars, but round to 4-stars. I can't wait to see the big finale Morrison has in store for Batman Inc, as well as a critical event happens in the Bat mythos that will shake the entire New 52 Bat-family in Batman Incorporated Vol. 2 (The New 52).

Grant Morrison finally learns to stop having you chase your tail...
By T. Moore
... Too bad he learns this in the end of his tenure with The Batman character in whole. Like his pre- New 52 work, Morrison provides you with this character vast, colorful Batman world that whips you around like the Nolan movies do, at a good pace, but the dips and turns are unexpected, making the ride totally fun (with the exception of; The Resurection of Ra's Al Ghul- that book is just trash). What the Demon Star doesnt do- that Morrison was notorious for- was make you jump back all the way to the Batman of the 50's and 60's to figure out what/ who is going on. The Demon Star only sends you a bit back to his pre New 52 work for reference slightly. Making the book enjoyable to the newer Batman reader. Though this is listed as Vol. 1- under the new 52 banner, I have it listed in my Batman chronological order as Vol. 2. Enjoy!

The Penultimate Chapter to Grant Morrison's Batman Opus!
By wildweasel77
This hardcover collection is the penultimate book of Grant Morrison's seven year Batman run from 2006 till 2013.

While, agreeably, it may be difficult for new readers to get into, this collection is part of the bigger whole of Morrison's entire Batman run, and contains a great payoff to long-time Batman readers.

Morrison once said that 'It all makes sense in the end', and this is rightly so.

The chapters in this collection pays homage to several (albeit still significant) events in the Batman mythos. Though it clarifies that the events collected herein occurred before 'The NEW 52' DCU reboot, it blends well with the themes and direction of The New 52.

Here we see Damian (Al Ghul) Wayne, the New Robin and Bruce Wayne's (Batman's) biological son from Talia Al Ghul, is being targeted by a wide variety of assassins as her deranged mother has placed a considerable bounty on his head. Batman, being the strict and stoic father that he is, places Damian under close watch. But with Damian being the perseverant Wayne that he is, readers know that things will always spiral out of control. And as revelations after revelations are unravelled, readers are shown why Batman is giving Damian the 'cold treatment' because of a dark future that may or may not happen because of his actions. Also, a single chapter ('The Eye of the Gorgon') reveals Talia's twisted past, and what her underlying motivations are. Add the ensemble of International Batmen that The Dark Knight has assembled to counter the evils of 'Leviathan' and this book knocks the ball out of the park.

With amazing art and gripping story, this collection is definitely worth it!

Can't wait for the conclusion of this epic (Batman Incorporated Vol. 2: Gotham's Most Wanted (The New 52))

Recommendation: Buy!
