As recounted in this dark and affecting memoir, Metz's discovery of her husband's long trail of philandering well after he died reveals the state of willful ignorance and comfortable self-deception that reigned in her marriage. At their home in the northern suburbs of New York City on June 8, 2003, Henry, her husband of 13 years, suffered sudden cardiac arrest, leaving the author, a 44-year-old graphic artist, widowed and the sole caretaker of their six-year-old daughter, Liza. Initially unable to face the details surrounding his death, she left to her friends the task of cleaning out her dead husband's office, though those same well-meaning people hid from her the truth they gleaned from Henry's computer files and correspondence: he had been enjoying a two-year affair with another woman in their town, as well as numerous other dalliances. Metz, after the shock of Henry's death, found solace in shopping and flirting with a much younger artist, Tomas, who was also friendly with Henry; once Tomas intimated that Henry had another life, the author began digging, calling and e-mailing every woman she learned had had a relationship with her husband, obsessed with finding the truth. Open honest tale of heartbreak

Whew, what is there to say about this memoir? It drained my emotions several times, and I mean that in a good way. Ms. Metz poured her heart out here, and it was hardly for naught.

Julie Metz is in her office when she hears a heavy thud. Continuing her work, she doesn't think much of it. Then all of a sudden, her mind rewinds and she itemizes all of the things it wasn't. She runs into the kitchen and finds her husband Henry on the floor. She calls 911 and breathes into him, but he cannot be saved. Over the course of the next few days, her house becomes a parking lot for friends and family to aid her and her 7 year old daughter Liza. She hears a woman in Henry's office shriek shrilly but doesn't think much of it, as immersed in her grief as she is. Yet it comes back to her later. Going through the motions of returning to her schedule for her daughter's sake, Julie can't eat, she isn't sleeping well and she's being visited by Henry's spirit.

Six months later, a friend of both Julie and Henry tells her that Henry was unfaithful. This revelation understandably cuts to the core, but it's just the tip of the iceberg. There wasn't one liaison, there were several. As there were several women. When Julie finds out just how close to home his betrayals came, her bite is sharp. As she digs through the evidence of infidelities of the man she thought she knew and gave herself wholly to, there is much fury, pain, and most surprisingly, a curiosity that seeks to understand and almost forgive him these slaps in the face from him. It's almost like she stepped out of the pain and hurt she felt to try to understand a reason for this need of his and forgive, in such a way that shows how lucky he was to have her and what a mistake he made in seeking solace and comfort elsewhere.

The third section of the book shows Julie trying to pick up and put back together the pieces of her life, delving into dating again. The shock of the new way of dating (ahem: Match.com) is shocking to her as she met Henry in 1986, and was married to him until 2003. The trials and tribulations of her dating explorations are something many of us may have felt if we've ever gone the path of words and email before an official meeting.

The memoir is heavy, no doubt about that. There won't be many laughs reading it, but there's not a bitter tinge to it you might expect from a topic like this. You root for her because she's genuinely likable and honest about herself, her shortcomings and flaws, and her better attributes. Ms. Metz was not throwing herself a pity party in writing her tale. I can only imagine and hope this was a cathartic therapy session for Ms. Metz

Brilliant

Reading "Perfection; A Memoir of Betrayal and Renewal" made me realize how many of us walk through our suburban streets totally unaware of what goes on behind the manicured hedges of our neighbors. Metz's memoir is a transparent peek inside one perfect neighbor's window. But a real neighbor. A real woman. A real family. Her book is an easy to read, hard to put down story of the experience of love, betrayal, and the ultimate re-examination of everything she thought she wanted. I couldnt put the book down as I followed her through her discovery process, not only of her husband's hidden past but also of her own desires.

As a psychotherapist specializing in relationships, I think this book is a realistic and well written account of what happens when infidelity cracks open everything one thinks is real. Buy the book today!

Title Says It All

Anyone who has ever had their heart broken over a spouse's extramarital affair must read this book. You think you had it bad? Julie Metz couldn't even confront her husband about his affairs, because she didn't find out about them until six months after he passed away in front of her eyes. She eschews the normal internal struggle to find a sense of closure and instead makes the process external, by tracking down each of the women he had been carrying on with in order to confront them. The resulting story is a heart-wrenching but beautifully told journey into a second phase of life that everyone should be lucky enough to find.

The first book in the collected Transmetropolitan comics, Back on the Street, covers the first three issues. This, the second book, covers issues 4-12. While the first is pounding with intensity, here Spider Jerusalem settles into his setting and is put through his paces. Having gotten Spider out of his mountain retreat and back to reporting, it seems writer Warren Ellis started casting about to find something for Spider to do. A few of the issues are slower than the insanity of the first three, possibly meant as quiet, sarcastic reflection on social issues. That the series is, if not strictly autobiographical, at least very close to Ellis's heart, is clear. I would hope that the comic could remain as intense, even when its protagonist is writing about somber topics. Then again, Spider's columns are what the comic is about, and if these issues aren't full of heart-pounding action, they are still very good. The issue in which Spider becomes TV is almost completely static (a full three pages, 18 frames, consist of nothing but a view of Spider sitting in his chair) but is still one of the best stories. The pace picks up again in the last three issues, a 3-part story that has Spider pursued around The City by a neatness cult carrying his ex-wife's head in a jar. Extra-spectacular is the death of the police dog.

Another brilliant set from Warren Ellis.

"I Hate it Here." Perhaps this best sums up the personality of Spider Jerusalem, renegade reporter and cynic of the first degree. Disgusted by the world around him, he leaves the city and lives as a hermit.
Years after his escape, his publisher drags him back into the city, wanting the books he was promised five years back. Needing money to live in the city, he whores himself out to The Word, a newspaper run by an old friend. These are his "adventures."
Spider is brilliant, witty, and cynical. Through his eyes, Ellis gives an outlook of a bizarre future in which Aliens have landed, corporate America manages to advertise in your dreams, and reporters can write off their drug habits as a journalistic expense.
This is the second collection of Transmetropolitan, following back on the streets. Reprinted are issues 4-12. Spider is both hostage and witness as events unfold. Fortunately, it's ammunition which he fires right back at the world.
Spider can turn anything into an article, from the consequences of cryogenic freezing and restoration to simple Television. He visits reservations from the sensible to the logical extreme, and provides political commentary (And even rearranges their bowels). He encounters death threats and tangles with religion.
Let's not beat around the bushes here. This is a comic book. Fancy words aside, it's packages exactly as Spider-Man or Batman would be. That's where the similarities end. This is not aimed at children, and probably shouldn't be read by children. There is blood, gore, nudity, and thought-provoking material
What we do have is Warren Ellis' own use of the medium--A twisted, often dark, and humorous look at a futuristic world. his portrayal is brilliant, steps ahead of almost every other writer in the field of comics.
Brilliance in such a simplistic medium. Such a refreshing and innovative series.

Warren Ellis had already established the "who"-- outlaw journalist Spider Jerusalem-- of TRANSMETROPOLITAN with his introductory arc, "Back On The Street"; now, he defines the where. The futuristic sprawl of the eponymous City is the future-shock extrapolation of all the cultures in every modern city; a new religion is created every hour, the TV plants ads in your brain, and on every corner there's a man in a suit full of speakers who'd just love to get you on the air for the feedsites. In this collection of six one-shot stories (And the uproarious pandemonium of "Freeze Me With Your Kiss"), Ellis and Robertson point their camera at the little things that make the City what it is, from brain-fried cryogenic refugees of the twentieth century (In the unbelievably touching story "another cold morning") to the Foglets, men and women who love technology so much that they were willing to have their minds transferred into functionally immortal clouds of floating nanotechnology. Through Spider Jerusalem's cynical eyes, however (And Ellis' perfect writing), there's no way to miss all the raw humanity flowing through all of these far-out visions. Profane and vulgar, but simultaneously hilarious and moving. A can't-miss for anyone who reads comics, and a must-see for someone who's always thought them to be just for kids.

But Bennetts, a longtime journalist and writer for Vanity Fair, is more interested in investigating what she sees as the heart of the matter: economics. Through impressive research and interviews with experts and with real women, Bennetts shows that women simply cannot afford to quit their day jobs. Long-term loss of income has a cascading impact in areas such as medical benefits and retirement funds, not to mention a woman's sense of autonomy, derived from financial independence. Further, a career supplies a woman with a measure of security for herself and her children in the event of unexpected sickness or divorce. As any woman who has tried knows, returning to the workforce and finding a well-paying job after an absence of years, or even decades, is difficult. Ms Bennetts has clearly created a labor of love. i found her book insightful, thorough, well written, and well organized. parts made me laugh, parts made me want to cry. i think every woman should read this book who may ever want to have a family, long before that time comes, to plan and create a career for herself that will realistically suit her long term goals. I've lived the working mom life for a quarter century, and i concur-- if you're willing to negotiate the rules, you can have a more fulfilling life than a woman of any previous time could have had. ladies, find a way! be smart, read the book, make good choices.

Inspiring book that may piss you off, but will probably change your life for the better...

Wow, this book really opened my eyes and brought me back to reality. I spent my high school and college years working hard towards my future career goals, but after graduating and being surrounded by stay-at-home peers I started to doubt my career ambitions. This book helped me to "re-realize" my dreams for the future and not buy into the current stay-at-home trend.

This book takes a very direct and unrestrained look at the consequences of having a stay-at-home lifestyle. Much of the book is based on countless interviews of at-home and working moms and statistics from academia. It might be hard to accept, but much of her facts and assessments are indisputable. It also contradicts much of the "evidence" put out by mainstream media about how being a working mom can affect the family.

Some things to be aware of before reading this book:

- Bennetts and her interviewees seem to use capitalist measures of success to determine other's and their own worth, namely money and fame. This is practical and pragmatic since it is how our American society measures success and without money survival is impossible.
- This book is mostly relevant to middle/upper class women and/or educated women. Almost all of Bennetts' examples are of ivy-league graduates and those that have million-dollar-salary potential. Not to belittle my own or my peers' potential, but when you're making $40K per year it's hard to relate to someone who earns $1.5 million. I still found the book useful, but someone working at Wal-Mart might not.
- While Bennetts' overall argument is very feminist and I laud her for that, her guilt at choosing to be a working mom is evident and minimally jeopardizes the overall message. It seems she feels the need to defend her abilities as a mom to the stay-at-home crowd which implicitly suggests that she believes that as a woman/mother she does in fact have certain responsibilities. She mentions several times in her book that she is a good mom even though she works... she backs this up by saying that she makes dinner for her kids every night. This assumes that it's a mother's responsibility to make dinner for her kids. Does a father have to justify himself in this same way? If this book is to be truly feminist then Bennetts shouldn't have to justify her mothering with traditional/conservative measures of a mother's worth. To simply say that she and her husband ensure dinner is on the table and quality family bonding takes place should suffice.

Overall I found this book inspiring and an interesting read. I will definitely - though carefully - recommend it to my friends that are considering being at-home moms.

Read it.

Every female living in the United States should read this book. I am married, and not even planning on having kids, but I was so interested in the topic that I read this book anyway. I have always had the fantasy of not having to work and being 'taken care of' by a man and never realized how dangerous that can be. This book inspires women as it encourages them to find their passions and keep at it, even when the going gets tough. It also explores the consequences women face when they give up too much and depend on a man for economic stability. She explores the emotional issues women and marraiges face when they do not contribute financially to the marraige. I thought about things I would be giving up that I had never thought of before. This author backed up her points with extensive research. I originally got this book from the library, but now I am going to go buy a copy and lend it to all of my friends who have children.

I would encourage anyone who reads this book, especially stayathomemoms, to read it with an open mind and to not get defensive about the issues the author points out.

I have two complaints about this book, although I am not going to let it reduce my 5-star rating because I think this book is so important. First, it is a little long and, therefore redundant. Second, I wish that she had interviewed more men to get their perspectives. She did interview a few men, but I wish she had included more of their points-of-view in it.

A prayer book with a two fold mission for children and their parents

The hard back book, showing Jonah praying while still held in the whale's jaws, is an alternatively pictured two pages companion. Children memory capturing drawings, friendly and funny, promote a thought stimulating mood in full color. Quotations about prayer and praying are selected from the Bible, and from religious sayings, by St. Augustine to Francis of Assisi, and of wise thinkers as R. L. Stevenson and R. Niebuhr. Two Cd's cling to the inside front and back covers, with corresponding hymns, prayers, and songs. The prayers are formatted in children own language, to appeal to young kids and toddlers, with a mission of teaching religious virtues, through their background stories that children could relate and enjoy when they hear them again and again.

The book could be helpful as a devotional, a different prayer is read daily by mom or dad to the youngster, who may then listen to the related praise song on the cd, (identified at the top of each right page with a cd image to lead you to the beautifully written song), which children can hear again before enjoying the singing. Here, the book introduces the prayer on the left side page with relevant information about it, and how it could applied in children daily activities, in language that appeals to children, and catch their attention. The right side page has a quotation or comment in "My little prayer reminder" that follows a beautiful illustration.

I think that this book has a two fold mission, training the parents to pray, training them to share spiritual dialogue with their sons and daughters. This should encourage the children to practice a spontaneous loving encounter, when the child expresses his feelings and emotions addressed to our heavenly father, extending into a life of prayer in happy and sorrowful occasions.

Praise!!

The kids loved this book! I enjoyed that it has 100 different prayers/songs to use in prayer. Rejoice! ; This book rocked because it had age appropriate praise. Some children may be in the preteen category and don't/cant relate to praise written for adults. The illustrations were also beautiful. For example a special prayer to help children learn to cope with the anxiety of illness. (Children depicted smiling coming from a hospital.) If you have any family member in Hospice get the children in that family this book!

Stephen Elkins "100 Prayers God Loves to Hear, 100 Praise Songs" is a lovely little anthology of prayer and song; the overall book, text, and songs are geared toward Christian believers. The book contains 2 CD's - each holds 50 songs, one to accompany each of the 100 prayers in the book. Beginning with an introductory "10 Bible Verses About Prayer," the text continues with 100 individual lessons. A subtitle below each heading provides a succinct explanation of the highlighted prayer's purpose. A brief homily precedes the prayer; the prayer is usually followed by a one-sentence concluding statement. The facing page contains an illustration above a section "My Little Prayer Reminder" - that can be a Biblical verse or a quotation from a famous, historic individual. The upper right hand corner of this facing page also shows the CD song title, disc number, and song number that is being coupled with the particular prayer. The songs are a mix of traditional hymns and contemporary Christian songs.

Most of the prayers are well done and some are very moving; some are traditional prayers, some Biblical verses of prayer, and some seem to be original to the book. The two "silly" prayers - in this adult's opinion - are The Peanut Butter Prayer" and "The Puppy Prayer." However, this is a book geared to children and toward teaching them that any occasion is an appropriate time to pray. Thus, while I found these two prayers a bit silly, I can see where a child might pray for just such topics and find them quite relevant.

This is a real treasure for anyone who wants to encourage a child or a family to incorporate prayer into their daily life. It would also be a blessing to those wanting to learn how to pray for the text demonstrates that some of the most powerful prayers are some of the most simple. Each of the 100 prayers along with the accompanying text and song would be ideal to use for daily, family worship. Younger children, in particular, will not lose interest in the activity since the prayers and homilies are short, and the songs are, for the most part, lively. To quote the prayer reminder for the 97th one included "True prayer is measure by weight, not by length." The true weight of this little book will be measured in the impact it has on a child's and family's spiritual growth, not by the length of each of the 100 parts.

I would encourage anyone interested in providing a lasting, meaningful gift to a beloved child or family to consider purchasing this book. It is truly a treasure to be shared.

Not a practical guide to the transport pricing of electricity

This book is a collection of papers by academics on the transport pricing of electricity networks. I think this book would be mainly of interest to academics working in the same field. Certainly you would probably need a graduate level of education or equivalent in economics to make sense of the work. This is not really a book for those looking for practical guidance on the transmission or distribution pricing of electricity. Also the book isn't good value for money. I might expand this review later with more detailed comments, but in short my feeling is that only academics would get much value out of it, everyone else should look elsewhere for guidance in this area.

Absolutely Superb Introduction to Electricity Economics

This is the French government at its finest. A group of French academicians lucidly and brilliantly explain the philosophy, economics, quandries and implications of electricity pricing policies. Absolute "must read" for anyone in this field who does not already have PhD level understanding.

A joy to read and ponder.

Amish characters, but miles away from traditional Amish novels

Ruth Reid's story grabs you fast and the builds as a spiraling pace.
Amish storytelling the likes of which you no longer get from some top-selling Amish genre authors whose publishers want speed, not quality.
Readers will empathize with well developed characters quickly.
The timbered wilderness of northern Michigan holds more than a miracle. It contains adventure and suspense. Flood water, thin iced rivers, fire, wild animals, freezing temperatures, sinkholes, caves and kidnappers.
That and more.

Wooded wilderness is not the ideal location for a sweet romance, even if it is maple sugar season. If this cool relationship `twixt Grace and Ben is to warm up, it will take more than one Woodland Miracle due to their past issues.
This "Christian Romance" seems somewhat mislabeled. There is way too much suspense involved to allow this story to stand as a single genre tale. "Bold blistering contemporary Amish fiction" better labels the story Ruth Reid provides in "A Woodland Miracle." For sure and certain, it's not lazy frolics in the haymow, or even simply evening buggy rides down a picturesque farming countryside. This is thriller suspense in the wooded acres flourishing with constant danger. It's the life-risking existence of lumbermen in suspenders and the women who await their return from the winter-long tree falling task.

It's a wonder; it's a woodland Amish wonder; it's "A Woodland Miracle."
Highly recommended. I received a gift book, ZERO obligation to review, but just had to share how fast and convincingly this story grabbed and would not let me let go. A sign of good fiction writing.

God's Grace Is Sufficient for All!

I can't even describe how fantastic this book was! Ruth Reid has a knack for pulling you in to a story and not letting you go until the very end. The plot was engaging, thrilling, and so good! The trouble that comes to the small community at Badger Creek is completely unexpected. Even though the action starts at the halfway point, the plot is still engaging up to that point. It gives you a better hint into the lives of the main characters.

Speaking of the characters... I LOVED Ben! I think that's how the author intended him to be. He was funny, kind, caring, and completely human. His view of himself, especially after all the mischief he'd made, was natural. His attraction to Grace didn't feel forced. Grace is hardworking, caring, and terrified of her future. Her view of herself, because of her limp, is disheartening. I think Ben is exactly the type of guy she needed to pull her out of her insecurities.

The message of the story, as stated on the back cover, is learning that God's love is sufficient. The verse used over and over in the story drives this point home: "And he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness..." 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV). Anyone who has ever experienced any kind of weak moment or illness or disease can understand and cling to this verse. As my preacher said on Sunday, God doesn't always choose the strongest, most handsome person to use for His glory because He can see what's on the inside, not outward appearances that man sees. How comforting!

Overall, I loved this story and I certainly look forward to more from this amazing author.

Neither One Feels Worthy, But A Michigan Winter Reveals Piercing Truths

Grace Wagler has never felt worthy of love or attention because of her weakened legs, and she fears a life of dependence and pain like the one she saw her mother living before the older woman's death. Ben Eicher is an Amish "bad boy" sent from Florida to northern Michigan to straighten up. The two are an unlikely couple, but they'll need to lean on each other to get through the most difficult circumstances of their lives.

I love any romance where a good girl falls for a bad boy--or vice versa, although I tend to identify more with good girls. I identified with Grace more than usual because of her moderate yet life-changing disability, and I wanted to see her learn to trust others. For this reason, it sometimes frustrated me that she constantly pushed Ben away. At the same time, Ben doesn't initially present himself as the kind of man she needs. Everything is a joke to this guy, until the woods of northern Michigan, and criminals on the loose, force him to take a hard look at who he is, who he wants to be, and who God created him to be.

The wilderness setting wasn't my favorite; I'm not too into person vs. nature stories in general. Yet Ruth kept the character and spiritual development going strongly enough that I remained interested. Grace's interactions with Gordon were particularly fascinating from a psychological and relational standpoint.

As for Grace's disability, I'm not sure I agree with how the Amish church chooses to handle this type of situation. Yes, disabilities can be God's will, but if treatment is available I see nothing wrong with the individual choosing to take it. However, Grace, Ben, and others strike a good balance between trusting God and taking advantage of what medicine has to offer. I liked how Grace's decision was not ultimately an all or nothing one, and the fact that Grace was not "miraculously" healed. I think the real miracle in this book, and in real life, is how people learn to open their hearts to others and to God. And those miracles happen every day.
