The Battle For Oa Is On
By Simon
Green Lantern Corps: Blackest Night collects issues #39-47, which covers the Battle Of Oa during the Blackest Night crossover event. Black rings are reanimating the dead across the universe, and it's up to Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner and their fellow Lanterns to hold the line and prevent Oa from being overrun.
The great thing about this volume is that 90% of it works as a stand-alone story on the off chance that you haven't read the main Blackest Night series or any of the other tie-ins. The Corps is essentially isolated and fighting their own battle, so there's less of the jarring "fill-in-the-blanks" effect that plagues the Green Lantern: Blackest Night collected edition. There's also none of the cash-in aftertaste that the more extraneous volumes like Blackest Night: Rise of the Black Lanterns have - this is a genuinely compelling narrative in its own right. Of course there's that remaining 10%, and it's during the penultimate chapter that the book folds itself into the bigger Blackest Night saga, and here is where being a little more knowledgeable about the overall event helps the reader. Still it's a small price to pay, and it helps that the final epilogue chapter is included instead of leaving things on a cliffhanger.
What Green Lantern Corps: Blackest Night also does well is that while it's a tie-in to a crossover event, it doesn't skimp on any of the plot threads that have been brewing throughout Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason's run. If you've followed previous volumes like Green Lantern Corps: Sins of the Star Sapphire and Green Lantern Corps: Emerald Eclipse, this one feels like a natural and rewarding continuation of the overall story. So we get more on Kyle and Soranik Natu's budding romance, Sinestro Corps' Kryb searching for her lost 'children', and Salaak finally confronts the Alpha Lanterns about their methods. Beyond these developments, it's fun to see the Battle of Oa escalate at an often breakneck pace. Tomasi comes up with some surprisingly imaginative ways to deal with the Black Lantern menace, and Patrick Gleason's pencils skillfully match the insanity. Also of interest is that one mid-volume cliffhanger reads quite differently in collected form than it did during the initial serialized run. New readers can only imagine how jaw-dropping a certain last-page reveal was, and the accompanying month-long wait for the next installment.
This volume also includes a full cover gallery (including all the cool variants), some character bios, concept art and bonus art of one character that was saved from a Black Lantern makeover. This is definitely a worthwhile read for anyone interested in Blackest Night, and marks a great finale to Tomasi and Gleason's tenure on the series.

Great Zombie Reading
By Gregory S Bailey
I got all of the Blackest Night books not only because I love DC, but because of the zombie angle also. Once you start, you just can't stop with the Blackest Night books. Just make sure you read Green Lantern: Blackest Night first! Nothing else will make sense until you read that first.

A good showcase of the sprawling epic of Blackest Night
By Michael A. Weyer
While this collection isn't as "must-have" for Blackest Night as "Green Lantern" is, it's still a good read. It shows how on Oa, Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner lead the attacks against the Black Lanterns invading the universe. There is powerful stuff like Killowog facing his former instructor and a great bit where he screams at the Black Lanterns of former Corps members who died, saying it's their own fault they paid the price: "You all thought it would be someone else but it was you! Not my fault! Not...my...fault."
The art is good, showing the wild space battles and a twist of Guy becoming a Red Lantern is short, but fun as is the arrival of the other Lantern Corps for a huge battle. It may not approach the level of the other "BL" collections but still offers a great insight to the massive conflict from the Lanterns' perspective and a wild space saga to boot.
