Changed my life perspective

After one day of reading this book my life changed. I was in the parking lot of Krogers, contemplating if I had enough money to buy an avocado, Pico, cilantro, Greek yogurt ranch dressing and lime chips.. I decided that I didn't and that I t was TOTALLY OK...I COULD MAKE A TURKEY BURGER AND GET MUSTARD PACKS FROM A CONVENIENCE STORE (I'm a condiment junkie) and be ok... I put me car in reverse and saw my Godmother in my rearview mirror..I spoke and we hugged..she then commenced to give me $50..cause she felt compelled to do so..I rode around for a bit crying tears of joy on how the universe responded instantly to my desires!!! This s*** is real!! Mans work is forever with himself!! Change your perspective..change your life.

Profoundly Simple, but Simply and Profound

Delving deeper and deliberately

It took a closer reading of this book to fully appreciate it, having read 'Ask And It Is Given' and 'The Law of Attraction.' If you are new to these teachings, I recommend, you read one of those first in order to fully appreciate what is presented here. This book focuses on the NOW, in making sure you stay aligned with your higher non-physical self(and thus source energy/God/universe), moment by moment. Exercises and examples are offered to help you get back on track towards alignment no matter what your emotional state. Yes, there is some repetition from other books, but that is what it takes to "get it". And while I was initially disappointed that some of the same processes discussed in 'Ask..' were repeated here, I realized that these were specifically chosen given the theme of this book, and the fresh examples offered, provided another incentive to use them! For those who have understood the basics, and then get stuck occasionally, or want to ratchet up their alignment with source, this book is a must. For me, it reinforced some fundamental points:
i) that more important than want you desire, is how you FEEL about that desire, and the vibration you offer.
ii) feeling good about something or a situation is more important than being right or justified in your negative emotion/judgment of it.
iii) nothing is more important than feeling good.
(For those who are critical of 'feeling good' or see it as selfish while African children are starving, recognize that unless we feel good, we are unable to be of benefit to others or focus beyond our immediate needs, let alone anyone else's. Also, as we move up the emotional scale toward peace/love/joy, our perceptions of 'self' is also more likely to change to embrace all beings as part of the interconnectedness that is the Universe, and one with Source. This is more likely to result in creating more compassionate deliberate intentions and manifestations to benefit all beings!

Ultimately though, this book is about making the most of our time in this physical plane, using our consciousness and thoughts to keep us in alignment with source energy in order to experience joy and abundance.

About the Author

David Perlmutter, M.D., FACN, is a board-certified neurologist and fellow of the American College of Nutrition. He serves as medical director of the Perlmutter Health Center and the Perlmutter Hyperbaric Center in Naples, Florida and is also an adjunct instructor at the Institute for Functional Medicine. He is the author of three books and numerous journal articles. Dr. Perlmutter has appeared on 20/20, Larry King Live, CNN, Fox News, Fox and Friends, the Today show, The Oprah Show, and The Early Show on CBS.

Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D., has trained as a psychologist and medical anthropologist, and has studied the healing practices of the Amazon and the Andean shamans for more than 25 years. While at San Francisco State University, he founded the Biological Self-Regulation Laboratory to study how the mind creates psychosomatic health and disease. Dr. Villoldo directs The Four Winds Society, where he trains individuals in the U.S. and Europe in the practice of shamanic healing. An entrancing read....Buyer Beware

I found this an easy, captivating, and believable read. It entrances the reader with the arguments - until you consciously appraise the book when you will release that there is no information at all on counter arguments. And therein lies the problem. This is a book which puts forward a solution which, if you literally read everything in it - will (note there is no consideration in the book that these remedies might - or might not work) make the lame walk again; solve the low energy which so many of us have today; and prevent Parkinson's and many other age related mitochondrial problems. Yet there is no critical peer review of the solutions proposed. Do they work for everyone? How many people have followed the regime and not benefited from it? To be honest - even though that rings loud warning bells in itself - I'd still be tempted to try the programme of lifestyle / diet / supplement changes proposed. I've had serious life long problems exercising aerobically; had mitochondrial analysis by muscle biopsy as its been screaming out to me that the mitochondria are the problem; have very low energy; had complex PTSD; have a parent who suffered from Parkinsons.... This book therefore seemed to resonate so strongly and offered The Solution...

And then I looked at the cost of the supplements. Very cheap working out at pence per day if you buy some of them individually, green tea extract; curcumin; sulforaphane etc - and this I may do. But buy these combined from the official source XYMOGEN as suggested in the book and its over $100 a month.... which energetically feels so very very wrong to me. Why such an excessive mark up?

Additional supplements are also required - including vegetarian DHA; in the quantities suggested - 1000 mg a day - this will set you back over £5 a day for a quality branded product. Also 'controlled release' Alpha Lipoic Acid is required. Now controlled release ALA is potentially a marketing scam - google "the case against controlled release alpha lipoic acid Heinz Ulrich" to read the paper concerned. But CR Alpha Lipoic acid is more expensive than the non CR product... and guess what? Xymogen sell it as well - and that's another $100 dollars a month gone. For as long as you live.

By an amazing co-incidence, Xymogen is owned by the co-author of this book David Perlmutter.

I then looked at the powerupyourbrain.com web site. The 6 day Intensive programme costs over $8000 (based in Italy - the cost is firmly fixed in US dollars!). It includes 5 sessions of shamanic 1 to 1 healing plus journalling and breath work, a fire ceremony and a massage which account for an almighty $3500 part of the cost. This is totally non residential . Someone is going to get very very rich as a result of desperate people like me reading the book and buying the all in one Nrf2 supplement or going on the 6 day course.

Saddened beyond belief because whilst I sense that Villoldo understands more than most of us about a nearly lost way of living and understanding our connection to the earth - he seems to me to be increasingly motivated - or perhaps corrupted is a better word- by the ease with which he can make money. Which just seems plain wrong given that his wisdom was given so freely to him by native people in the first place.

As to the book itself - apart from trying to make a case for these supplements (David Perlmutter met Villoldo in Peru and the two seem to have had a meeting of their commercially orientated value systems in bringing this forward) it is intensely repetitive with extracts from previous books of Villoldo's.

So unless you are mega rich and can afford to spend over $2000/year on supplements for ever, there's no point buying this book in my opinion. I know that Villoldo has a huge following of people who will no doubt spring to his defence against this review - and to be honest, I'd love to count myself in amongst them. Shaman, Healer Sage was such an amazing book. But Villoldo's path is most certainly not an altruistic one, valid though it may be and I feel that this book is an example of how far off the path Villoldo has strayed as he supports the big con that is the great pharma industry.

A thinly disguised marketing pitch.

Being familiar with and appreciative of the past work of both authors I was interested in what they had to say. I am a medical professional and use natural and affordable foods, supplements and techniques to help people to heal their brains everyday, I know it does not have to be an endeavor only for the financially elite. Perhaps the good men writing this book have come into hard times, the gist of the book reads "come to my institute, attend my school, take my trips, and for goodness sake please buy our vitamins". Yes, there are a few nuggets of wisdom offered in the book but overall a very superficial, one-sided and greedy presentation of the amazing work that exists in healing and keeping the brain functioning optimally.

A Must Read!

I read Power Up Your Brain in one sitting, and recommend it highly. It is a wonderful balance of "right brain" and "left brain" information and philosophy, so it will appeal to - and speak clearly to - a huge and diverse audience. It is a clear prescription for health on many levels, presented with integrity by two excellent writers who know their material exceedingly well.

Excellent Study!

The cover of this study makes me feel energized! Full of energy and life Just Rise Up! calls us to live a life that proclaims Christ with every moment we live. Telling others about our relationship with the Savior can be a daunting proposition, but this wonderful Bible study will help you realize that there is so much more to sharing our faith than what we typically think of as evangelism.

Sarah Francis Martin breaks down each chapter into five shorter readings and includes a spot for journaling. I love how I was encouraged to really think about what I was reading, not just read to complete. Each section calls us to rise up, become the believer Christ intended us to be from the moment of our salvation.

A Nice Study On Praise Based On Psalm 146

One of the most important things about writing a book is selecting the perfect title, so I'll be honest: when I first saw the title Just Rise Up! A Call To Make Jesus Famous, I thought the book was going to focus on evangelism.

While that wasn't on my current list of preferred study topics, I truly enjoyed my time in the first four books in Thomas Nelson's Inscribed Collection of Studies By Women, so I decided to request the book anyway.

I'm so glad I did. In actuality, Just Rise Up! A Call To Make Jesus Famous is a Bible Study about praise.

Just Rise Up! by Sarah Francis Martin is a Bible Study based on Psalm 145. The author states that it's her hope that, by the end of the study, we will all lead lives that reflect daily praise of Jesus.

There are a number of things that I like about this study, including the author's personal stories about her life, the journaling prompts, the prayer notes, and the highly interactive nature of the study.

The one thing I felt was conspicuously missing from the book was an actual copy of Psalm 145 itself. While I recognize that most people will want to read the Scriptures in their preferred translations, I strongly believe that whenever possible, the passages that are being studied should be included for reference because readers will not always have their Bibles handy when they are previewing or reading the book! Since the central focus of this book is one Psalm, that rule applies!

In spite of the somewhat misleading title and the omission of the Psalm that the Bible Study is about, I truly enjoyed Just Rise Up! and found this Bible Study very relevant to my life. While the book seemed geared towards a millennial audience, I think that there is something that women of all ages can take away from this book.

a must buy book even with the slight gutter loss

Anyone who is a batman fan should definatley be reading the Scott Snyder new 52 batman run!!!!! I absolutely love the long story arcs and artwork and can't wait to complete the new 52 collection. The hardcover versions are absolutely beautiful and my only issue with them is the gutter loss due to it being a glued binding but that is expected with these books because they aren't bigger collections like the omnibuses and compendiums but it is still a must buy in my book

I was somewhat disappointed by the conclusion of the Court of Owls arc. Everything goes from total chaos, Batman on the ropes, Gotham has fallen, to well, a one trick pony. The first volume of the series was amazing. One of my favorite Batman arcs. The introduction of a whole new set of lore is an amazing accomplishment in a character that has been so well developed over the years. But again, everything was tied up in a neat little bow all too quickly and too easily.

Court is Dismissed

I think it is safe to say by now writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo have become synonymous with Batman, especially within the DC New 52, and it all started with Batman Vol. 1: The Court of Owls (The New 52). Batman was faced with the Court of Owls, an enemy that has been around since Gotham's earliest beginnings and had finally shown itself to the Dark Knight, to which was a powerful organization that had connections and resources Batman could never quite fathom, and the Batman paid for it--big time. But Batman pulled through it, just barely, and learned the error of his ways and got away to prepare for striking back. But the Court knows Batman is weak so it decides to attack Gotham while they can, sending out their entire army of Talon warriors to seize control once and for all...

...But Batman has had enough.

Finally, the wait if over. Snyder and Capullo's volume 2 of the conclusion to the Court of Owls story comes full-speed ahead that is equal parts gripping and powerful, yet eerily familiar to Pre-52 fans.

BATMAN VOL.2: CITY OF OWLS collects issues #8-12 with back stories "Fall of the House of Wayne" and BATMAN ANNUAL #1. Bruce Wayne has just starting to recover from days of torture in the Court's maze, to which suddenly the Courts Talons make a direct attack on the Wayne mansion. The ferocity of numerous Talons push Bruce to the point that he has had enough of owls and the Court and dons the Batman persona to finally put an end to the Court, by taking the battle back at them where it hurts.

I will not give out any more info because there would be spoilers aplenty, but let's clear some stuff first. First, go read volume 1 before reading volume 2. Many little clues Snyder expertly lay out in volume 1 start to unravel itself and come full circle here in volume 2, so you might need to refresh your memory as to catch all of the little nuggets of information you might of missed. Secondly, the companion book Batman: Night of the Owls (The New 52) is not essential or needed to read with volume 2. Snyder's Court of Owls volume 1 and City of Owls volume 2 is the prime self contained story that is vital, while Night of the Owls was the tie-ins that take place during the Talons attacks on Gotham. Thankfully, Snyder's City of Owls only makes a reference to the Night of the Owls event with Detective Comics which might confuse readers a little, but everything important and story-wise the reader needs is right here. And thirdly, if you read the Night of the Owls event before hand, keep your expectations in check. You might be expecting a full blown, epic scale ending that involves the entire Bat-family, but this is just a Batman book. It's still epic in its own right; it just didn't need the tie-ins to sell itself.

If volume 1 was the Court taking the fight to Batman, volume 2 is Batman taking the fight back to the Court. Snyder's Batman is raw with emotion about him as we saw with him going crazy in the Courts maze, to almost giving up, to volume 2 and his pandering of the Courts long existence and even getting overwhelmed by the Talons. But now Batman cuts loose his angry toward the court and the mastermind behind it all that we've all been dying to see. Added with the big reveal, Snyder's mystery and realization of the Court happens the exact same time the reader does, making Batman a character that reacts to the main bad guy in real-time with the readers. This makes volume 2 a great ending that gives readers what they want, seeing Batman get back at the Court and solve the mystery at the same time. Fans of Snyder's Batman: The Black Mirror will also truly appreciate the references to the big reveal and Black Mirror comparisons, further driving home Snyder's them of Batman being about Gotham itself.

Besides a good bulk of the book going to the conclusion for the Court of Owls story, volume also holds the the Batman Annual #1 is a good retelling of Victor Freeze in the New 52 and Batman issue #12 as a stand alone tale about Harper Row, the girl readers were introduced in issue #7 that proves to be a interesting character that Snyder is building for the future some time down the road. It does give the familiar feeling Row might fall into the tech person similar to Oracle Pre-52 but we'll see when the time comes.

Art is pitch-perfect by Greg Capullo. The fight in the Batcave against the Talons is exhilarating, to Batman's hatred of the Court, to the finally of the Main Owl leader. Everything is well done on Capullo's art and I have no problems with it at all. Jason Fabok does the Annual, while Becky Cloonan and Andy Clarke do issue #12.

As for complaints, I have a few. One real minor (and personal) one is the Talons are a bit too talkative this time around. The Talons keep their awe and mystique when they rarely speak, which they now sound like high school bullies. The main complaints involve readers who did actually buy the Night of the Owls book, because if you did, the only new issues you're getting are 10-12 when you buy City of Owls, so you feel a little bit cheated. Another is that the volume 2 has the prime Court of Owls conclusion story from issues 8-11, so you might read through the 4 issues reasonably quickly. And issue #12 and the Annual #1, which are good in their own right, feel a bit in cohesive, especially the Annual which is right in the middle of the book that hurts the flow of the Court of Owls conclusion. DC could of place the Annual the very end of the book as to not hurt the narrative.

And final heads-up has to go to the conclusion of the Court of Owls story. The mastermind behind the owls might make readers have various degrees of thought and feeling because Snyder introduces something that has to do with the Batman mythos that I'm sure will have different opinions on it. Some might scream foul on Snyder and some might applaud him for it. I'm a little in-between on the subject, but I'll let readers decide that for themselves. And for a comic that is supposed about new beginnings in the New 52, long time Bat-readers might not find the big reveal all that fresh and new since it makes references to past Bat-stores and ideas (Grant Morrison's run on Batman is one of a few example). New readers won't have a problem with this at all, but old time readers might or might not feel as if Snyder is really reinventing Batman as they thought he is. But again, you be the judge of that.

BATMAN VOLUME 2: CITY OF OWLS concludes on a high note that will either have you loving what Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have done or question it. Either way, the two make for a great team in the Bat-World right now that shows these men have the chops for it. Great writing, great art, and a overall great little mystery, City of Owls is great book if you enjoyed volume 1. But with the little drawbacks like the Court of Owls conclusion being 4 issues long, the Annual not fitting well fitting well here, or the questionable ending, I'll give the score a 4 ½ score, but round up to 5. Still a solid book worth checking and I'll see you Bat-readers around October for the next big arc with the return of the Joker in Batman Vol. 3: Death of the Family (The New 52).

On their 18th wedding anniversary, in 2003, Richard Carlson (author of the bestselling Don't Sweat the Small Stuff) presented his wife, Kristine, with a short manuscript called An Hour to Live. He imagines he has an hour to live and poses questions originally asked by spiritual guide and author Stephen Levine: whom would you call? what would you say? and why are you waiting? Uncannily, the text foreshadowed Carlson's death three years later, at age 45, of a pulmonary embolism. Though he had no chance to make that last phone call, his wife (and the reader) already knows his feelings for her and their children. We also know what was important to him, which boils down to the old chestnut: no one, on their deathbed, ever wishes they'd spent more time at the office. Included in the book is Kristine's tribute to Richard, called An Hour to Love. Both pieces (only 50 pages and padded with Richard's favorite poem and blank pages for the reader's own answer to the key question) are heartfelt—and oddly unengaging. They tell the reader how wonderful the Carlsons' marriage was, but don't show why. We are left with a lovely ideal—too ideal for readers to relate to. (Jan. 15)

Perfect Book for Couples...and Everyone Else

It is in the nature of so many of us to far too often ignore the fundamental tenets of a successful life until it is too late. This powerful little book is such a great reminder of the importance of living every day like it is our last. For, none of us really know when our time on this earth will be over.

Triple kudos to the author Kristine Carlson for having the strength to share with us her sad, yet so empowering story of the sudden loss of her husband at 45. Her husband, Richard Carlson, had a huge impact on me....and many millions more...with his series of books urging us to not sweat the small stuff. Truly amazing that three years before his death that he wrote the thoughtful letter that forms the basis for this book. How wonderful that Kristine has chosen to share that letter so that all of us may be reminded to honor the truly important in our lives.

I highly, highly recommend that EVERY couple read and absorb the beautiful message in this book. Likewise for family members and partners of all kind.

Most importantly, readers...myself included...need to live the message. We need to make sure that all of our love ones know how important they are to us. In this hyper kinetic, stressed-out world, oh how easy it is to fail to do so.

Kristine, my heart goes out to you for your loss and for the manner in which you have transformed your loss into a gift to the world.

Wake Up Call

This book is a small gem. On their wedding anniversary, a few years before he died unexpectedly at a young age, Richard Carlson gave his wife an incredible gift of love through a letter based on Stephen Levine's challenge: If you only had an hour to live, who would you call and what would you say? Not only does Carlson tell his wife all that she has meant to him and how much he loves her, his words allow all of us to understand that if we only had an hour to live, most of the things we currently think are important truly are not. That extra hour at the office, making more money, etc., pale in comparison to the moments we spend expressing our love and paying attention to our lives. We don't need to wait until we only have an hour to begin to live and appreciate our lives and those we love. Start now!

A Must Read for just about anyone

"An Hour to Live, an Hour to Love" was a Christmas gift from a dear friend who knows how crazy our lives can be these days. We all get so busy, we forget that in the end relationships are the most important thing. My husband and I read the book together - which I would highly recommend couples do. It's not just for couples though - anyone could benefit from the inspiring reminders of what is truly most important in life. While it is sad, it's also very uplifting. We read it in less than an hour too! A must have!
